He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.Then he talked about rockets. That's the kind of problems such implementation would have to solve at the grunt level.To get it done right takes time, money and quality engineers.Elon thinks he can do it with twenty sleep-deprived "10X Hardcore 2.0 SWEs" in 6 months on a shoestring budget... while shutting down several DCs in January.

@rodhilton Fortunately for the astronauts that depend on SpaceX rockets to carry them to and from the International Space Station, the SpaceX company is run by President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell who leads an excellent team of engineers. The loudmouth CEO has little to do with the day-to-day design and building of the rockets.

@rodhiltonTo get why Musk looked remarkable you have to go back to the 2000s.In the 2000s it was widely believed that EVs were a pipe dream and that oil depletion would halt all modern civilization. Remember “the oil drum” or dieoff.org?Space was the same. Economical launch was impossible. There’ll never be a space age.Then Musk bursts out with practical EVs and reusable rockets. It seems magical, superhuman, like he was some kind of savior. I definitely felt that way.

@rodhilton I think Musk looks less remarkable now for two reasons. One is that he has definitely declined on a personal cognitive level. He’s always been a bit of an ass and mercurial but this level of irrationality is new. Secondly the world seems less bleak today in the specific area or real world innovation. More people are really doing stuff like space and fusion and EVs and such today than were doing so back in the 2000s.

@rodhilton That being said I do still give him some credit for maybe even helping end the little dark age of stagnation in areas like transportation and energy that began in the 1970s. I think when people saw EVs beat Lamborghinis and rockets land themselves a lot of people realized they needed to just ignore the pessimists who said such things were impossible. The pessimists really took over the narrative in the 70s and seem to be losing it now. Keep your eye on fusion!

@rodhilton we don't talk enough about how robust a lot of systems are. I worked at the state level in an essential system for most of five years, and the normal, everyday story was making it work in spite of idiots in charge. And we did. We got people in the door and back out the door, mostly with what they needed. During my stay, as a team, our metrics even improved even though the new CFO came in and implemented the exact same program that had failed before this one.It's actually not super hard to be in charge of a good company while being a raging boor and an idiot. I'm not suggesting you buy a Tesla or join SpaceX. I know fuck all about rockets or cars. I'm saying we really need to get rid of this "successful company = genius" nonsense.
