When Blue LEDs first came out they were stunningly expensive - this catalogue shows them as £29.40 each with it emphasised as 'Prices are in POUNDS each'. From a 1990 Electrovalue catalogue.#retrocomputing

@penguin42I remember my high school electronics teacher in '96 being very excited about the prospect of LED TVs and things like that.

@penguin42 my dissertation was on using pulse oximetry to monitor carbon monoxide levels in blood.Fortunately I didn't need any LEDs in that colour range, otherwise it would have been a massive waste of money when I entirely cocked everything up, and proved I couldn't design a circuit or write assembler code to save my life.

@v_perjorative Pulse Oximetery is a mix of IR and red isn't it? That's the easy end of the spectrum!

@penguin42 yup. Still didn't stop me turning several LEDs into small IEDs.Just glad they were relatively cheap.

@v_perjorative I seem to remember LEDs have an oddly sweet smell when you pop them off :-)
