Matrix is doing some extraordinary work, but they’re having to lay off staff. If your org uses it, maybe look into dropping them some funding? https://matrix.org/blog/2022/12/25/the-matrix-holiday-update-2022

Sorry to *opine* here for a second, but I see a thing playing out with Matrix the way it did for Mastodon (ActivityPub), and tons of other projects before it.Namely, nobody really gives it the love, care, attention, and support it needs to flourish and be successful before we really need it. So when the time comes that we *do* need it, it looks like a failure. The time to look into Matrix is now, before Discord fucks up and sends your online life into turmoil (again).

We might imagine that Mastodon is safe because it cannot be acquired or controlled by any one entity, but it absolutely *can* be.In fact, with interest in it rising, Mastodon is at its *most* vulnerable time right now. Mastodon is in many respects an inadequate implementation. All any corporation has to do is launch a major ActivityPub implementation with the features and polish people want—enough to migrate people over en masse—and they will have effectively "acquired” Mastodon. (And honestly I suspect this is going to happen soon anyway.)Google destroyed RSS and XMPP this way. Yes, they’re still out there, but only shadows of their former selves.Matrix gives us the rare chance to head off this phenomenon before it happens.

@est If that (hopefully) unlikely outcome happens with Mastodon, I'm done with social networking forever. I've come to adore this place and hope that it remains independent.

@killyourfm @est existing Mastodon will probably prove more durable than Usenet or IRC were, and they lasted quite a long time in the face of corporate pressure.

@debacle @magicfab @est Google Reader shutting down sparked an absolute tidal wave of new, better RSS clients (and sync servers). I used RSS before and after Google Reader, and I honestly have no idea what you mean by "destroyed RSS".

@raucao @debacle @magicfab @est the available software for self hosting the subscription to RSS got better but it killed RSS being available everywhere so it was a huge net loss regardlessDoesn't matter how good your RSS reader is if nobody offers RSS anymore

@feld @debacle @magicfab @est This sparked my interest, so I just had a look. My OPML export contains 333 feeds at the moment. I think at the height of Google Reader it was around 200. Now, a lot of them are inactive, of course, but that's due to blog authors being inactive, and not due to Google Reader shutting down.I would agree much more with the statement that "Twitter killed blogs" (less friction for publishing quick thoughts, plus increased reach), than with "Google destroyed RSS".

@raucao @debacle @magicfab @est you're too focused on small content producers. Every local news site used to run a CMS that supported RSS. That's extremely uncommon now. I'm sure metrics would have shown that the majority of their subscribers were using Google Reader and there weren't many good options out of the gate, plus Twitter was exploding, so it was the path of least friction ...

@raucao @debacle @magicfab @est it only works for nerds who have the free time to dig into the source code of websites and find the buried path to the neglected but somehow still functional feeds

@feld @debacle @magicfab @est I absolutely never do that. And you're still missing the whole point. Google cannot kill a protocol, if people want to use it. Your mainstream adoption is completely irrelevant for that.

@raucao @debacle @magicfab @est I absolutely had to do that many many times when I tried to use RSS two years ago and I doubt much has changed. You just happen to care about viewing sites that still have RSS. You exist in a bubble

@killyourfm @est I'm afraid that you've misunderstood ActivityPub. The more successful Mastodon becomes, the more likely it is that big tech chooses to be compatible with it. Corporations choosing to operate their own instances will want stronger support than Eugen can provide. MS will add ActivityPub support to Exchange Server. :mastodon: admins will be left arguing over whether to federate with them, and I predict that most will.

@killyourfm @est Beauty of federated servers is that you can still have the small cozy ones only federating between each other.
