was Alt-F4 always a soft program exit and not a kill process command in windows? because I kinda wish it was a kill process command

Me hitting alt-f4 should not be a suggestion where the program gets to ask me if I'm sure. If I hit alt-F4 it should be me taking a revolver to whatever is selected.

@Rasp yeah, it's always been a soft exit, you've always just had to go into the task manager to get it Killed Really

@doe Still I hate getting dialog box when I hit it instead of the program just fucking quitting like I asked.

@Rasp i'm sure there's a program called like "Super Alt F4" which force terminates processes on Ctrl-Alt-F4 if you have it installed

@doe I shouldn't have to install additional software the OS should just do it.

@Rasp Alt-F4 used to just shut down Windows back in the 3.1 days i'm p sure, i think it was 95 that made it a soft quit of the program in focus

@Rasp Yes, Alt-F4 has always sent the same signal as pressing the X in the menu bar. If you enqueue this message 3 times and the program has not stopped or cleared the message, Windows will prompt you with the end program or wait for it to respond dialog. Of course if the program is consuming this message and just refusing to die, then you have to go to the process manager.

@Rasp @doe I think the reason is to prevent you from losing work just because you hit a key combination.

@Rasp alt+f4 is not much more than a "close current window" command. What happens to the process in question when the main window is closed depends on each application's code...

@Polychrome @doe I mean yeah I get that but I hate having to always click through quit confirmations. plus my hand is never anywhere near the function row unless I'm about to nuke something.

@Rasp Normally alt f4 is a graceful exit in most programs I've used, saving what they need to and closing or asking if you really want to quit/quit options (Windows will even ask what you want to do and bring up the shutdown option select screen when you alt f4 the desktop). I feel like ctrl alt f4 might be good for a process kill command though. Two button hold and one press for emphasis on "this needs to be gone now".
