@vbuterin From these polls I've found my working definition of institution involves a multi-generational structure of people working in service of a concept with the ability to retire and introduce new members to sustain itself. I may have a bit of a blind spot where I don't consider concepts themselves institutions.

@vbuterin interesting, wondering why I answer no for Twitter, and yes for Ethereum. I guess it's because Twitter is so intensely, viciously pluralistic/multipolar that it wouldn't even be able to reach a provisional compromise verdict on questions like, whether Twitter should exist, or whether literally anyone should tweet.

@vbuterin Institution as a byword for organisation could apply to any group with a formal, organised structure and a stated goal. But an Institution is also a pervasive, multigenerational cultural phenomena that moulds cultural norms, expectations and behaviour. Sometimes an institution (organisation) is also an institution (zeitgeist).

@vbuterin the best test I can think for what defines an institution is whether the role performed by the entity remains largely unchanged regardless of the current leadership or circumstances.Some of your examples are just too recent for us to be able to apply this test (Bitcoin magazine, Ethereum blockchain), some simply make no sense (what is institutional role of Elon Musk, and who could replace him?)

I love the polls. Thanks for Making my Christmas fun. I have been reading all the polls & I don’t know, most of them don’t appear to be institutions. Isn’t an institution a cause or a purpose. Can you help me understand what is your idea of an institution? I think you are genuinely a good person so I value your opinions. I honestly just try to find people to talk to on social media but no one really answers. Maybe they don’t find me interesting. 🤷♀️ I’ll keep trying. Merry Christmas V. ❤️

@vbuterin All core devs get more institution votes than “Ethereum blockchain” I would really love to see the result for Ethereum alone 😊 Checking the Fundation separately would probably be pushing it though and adding yourself as a separate entity probably out of the question 😅
