@edbott @adaitsman @dak3 This is a debate that's been hotly debated on the dev level. There have been many proposals to implement this feature but Eugen has apparently argued that he didn't want to include it because it would spread toxicity & cyberbullying. This debate is still ongoing, maybe as more people demand it, it might come?So far none of the forks have included this feature either.Sadly for me, my instance runs on Akkoma (fork of Pleroma) which does support quote posting but since Mastodon doesn't support it, it won't render my post. Since most of my follows & followers use Mastodon, it effectively renders the feature useless since I can't use it...

@edbott @dak3 @adaitsman Personally I really think not adding this feature because of cyberbullying doesn't make much sense considering abusers can easily work around this problem by taking a screenshot to quote post. Worse part is, with the screenshot method, the target would have no idea you were talking shit behind their backs.Also, they're taking away a useful feature because some bad apples could abuse it. Honestly to me this is a moderation issue, not a technical one. Mastodon remains the only microblogging platform without this basic feature.

@ultimape @dak3 @adaitsman @edbott It really goes both ways, it adds friction for both legitimate & abusive uses.Honestly, it doesn't really add more friction to the abusers, and adds the extra issue that now you don't know someone is talking shit about you and others dogpile on top. The whole point was that it is supposed to stop/reduce dogpiling and cyberbullying but it doesn't, it also has the unintended consequence that the target doesn't know it's even happening while their reputation potentially suffers.Again, this is really a moderation issue, not a technical one, it's a moderator's job to deal with these.

@deltatux @dak3 @adaitsman @edbott it adds friction for dog piles and that can be a headache for mods. It ends up being something that many people don't want because of that burden.I've been using links as quote tweets since before quote tweets were a thing. And am setting up my own pleroma because I use them for my own idea webs since forever.

@deltatux @dak3 @adaitsman @edbott This has been a long standing thing in mastodont because it started out as a platform that is biasing toward anti harassment.Given that it is equally useful for both, and people who are harassed get the bulk of the negative fallout, it has been habitually chosen against.At one point people were defederating from pleroma nodes because of this stuff being seen as a risk.Hard to argue against.

But the hard and fat rule on masto seems unlikely to budge.Yes the originals It seems to be adjacent to sea lioning, I think the pleroma blocks were related to search. @leo @edbott My experience as well. When I've been frustrated by not being able to QT, I reply instead, and it's generally (in my experience) been the better choice anyway.

@edbott@mastodon.social other fediverse servers have this and many other features. Misskey and its forks Calckey and Foundkey, pleroma and its forks. I believe a fork of mastodon also exists, but i personally dont like madtodon instances from the user perspective.
