@GrapheneOS for the last week or so Instagram is completely broken on my Pixel 7. When trying to post a picture it decides to turn on my camera and jump to the stories tab. Reinstalling didn't help. I suspect it happens right as it tries to access location data. It happens regardless of permission status though.

@sjors We haven't heard of anyone else having issues. Make sure you have the dependencies of the app installed and configured correctly. This sounds like an issue with your setup.

@GrapheneOS doesn't the Play Store handle dependencies? Where do I find those?

@sjors We have no other reports of issues with this. You almost certainly have a configuration issue. Make sure you have a battery optimization exception granted to Play services. Try enabling Storage Scopes (or granting storage permissions, but Storage Scopes makes it unnecessary) for Instagram, Play services and the Play Store. Make sure the OBB toggle is enabled for Play Store in the package installation settings and reinstall Instagram, although we doubt that it uses OBBs.

@sjors If you need additional help, please ask on https://discuss.grapheneos.org/. There are other users successfully using Instagram without problems. Maybe they can help you.

@sjors Not entirely, since it simply assumes that Google Play Games, Google AR services, Google Speech Services, etc. are installed. It's possible you're missing a dependency it needs. We aren't sure. You can also try enabling the exploit protection compatibility mode for Instagram. It may be memory corruption bugs in the Instagram app causing these issues, but we'd expect to have heard about it previously if that was a problem for such a widely used app.

@GrapheneOS found a forum thread: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/2342-instagram-crashes-on-pixel-7I had tried enabling exploit protection compatibility before and it didn't work. But just tried it again and now it does work.

@GrapheneOS @sjors Instagram does indeed seem to have a memory corruption bug caught by hardened_malloc currently, so it requires enabling exploit protection compatibility mode or it will crash when performing specific actions within the app.
