Let it be known you can run #vrchat * On Linux* On Wayland* With a hybrid graphics setup* Using an Nvidia GPU* and EAC works fine:3 (Though dunno how well a 1650 Mobile will run with a lot of people haha)

I'm guessing a VR headset wasn't involved considering you mentioned Wayland?

@Ash Ahah ^^; guilty as charged! This is just in desktop. I imagine throwing VR into the mix would probably cause a lot more headaches... but I'm just happy I can pop into VRC just to checkup on people in Desktop on Linux for now ^^

Honestly was just curious; I've only ever experimented with Neos VR in Linux with VR. Although, I learned I must use x.org for it and that AMD cards for some reason have a higher latency in VR in Linux than they do on Windows, but the nVidia cards with proprietary drivers have no increased latency. I won't lie, VR had a lot of trial and error for me regardless of which platform and hardware I've been using it on.

@CyberKitsune Haven't had much luck with my custom steamvr driver shenanigans after the EAC update, but it's an esoteric setup anyway (for google cardboard over h264, a nausea inducer lmao)Still pissed about them adding that and destroying a whole modding scene though, why all major social vr platforms are even proprietary is beyond me :/

@awooo as somebody who works in gamedev my opinion on EAC is quite different, plus I've been privy to a lot of stuff on both sides that has both shown to me that adding EAC was probably the best option given the circumstances, and also a lot of key figures in the community modding scene definitely were less than upfront about some of the more... shady things they were involved with. I'm really happy VRC's dev team reacted so quickly to adding missing features, too.

@awooo there's definitely a lot to this that sadly I can't fully articulate in 500 characters x3

I would add one exception. The only drawback that effects me with their EAC change has been the fact my partner and I both can't enter VRC in a shared play space anymore.

@Ash Actual VR on Linux definitely comes with some jank, here's hoping Valve comes and helps fix that up a lot, given their next headset is rumored to be a standalone headset running SteamOS (Arch Linux)

Honestly; it wasn't that bad as jank goes. Wayland support is certainly something that needs to be done at some point though.

@CyberKitsune I guess I just look at it from the perspective of power in what is a tool for self-expression, especially for queer folk, as VRC hasn't exactly been friendly with nsfw content for example. I also don't see a client-side ac as really necessary in this case, because a lot of the issues it solves can also be solved with better validation and safety features, though it is harder of course.

@awooo The issue of having client side protections is a very nuanced one and believe it or not may have more to meeting financial regulations more than anything, of all things.The official treatment of NSFW content is also born from US / financial regulatory issues; and definitely isn't ideal or wanted by the VRC team themselves. Many queer and furry folk work at VRC nowadays, and all understand the importance of this. Sadly it's not simple to just allow it.

@CyberKitsune I'm actually curious about that part, obviously not a lawyer, but it seems odd to me that we generally have NSFW content on social media like birdsite and here on fedi, but VRC is somehow different in that regard? It also seems like both CVR and NVR have no issues hosting that stuff so it makes absolutely no sense to me.

@CyberKitsune In general I can't say I'm happy with where anticheat is going in regular games either, EAC is probably not the worst offender here anymore as there is a linux version that doesn't need kernel access, but things like vanguard are becoming more and more common and I feel like this arms race doesn't lead anywhere good.

@awooo it's different in every instance:CVR gets away with it as the EU feels differently on the subject, and they're all incorporated out of Germany.Fedi gets away with it due to the fact that all the individual servers don't need traditional funding and are subject to less regulations (donations over ads / selling subs)Birdsite gets away with it because they, have (had?) a proper T&S and legal teams to navigate it properly at cost ($$$)

@awooo VRC would need to navigate it like birdsite, which requires a LOT of resources they can not afford to have currently.
