@TornadoOfTerror Gaming is by far one of the most wasteful forms of programming, filled with the least experienced programmers who are very self assured. It used to be where absolute wizards went but instead its now filled with redditors who went to coding camps and goofy colleges with gaming degrees. Tech companies love it as it pushes the march of hardware needs forward and creates its own dependent economy.

@TornadoOfTerror I remember thinking this in high school when MGS2 was a stupid long wait. “Who asked for games to look this good? I mean, its cool but is it worth the huge waits and the games getting way shorter?” The tradeoff of fidelity and employing several hundred artists, plus taking between half a decade and a decade to produce a game isn’t worth it. I would enjoy all the From Soft games, and Platinum games just as much if they were PS2 era graphically and just utilized more modern processing benefits CPU wise.

@AgoristDad @TornadoOfTerror Plus, the better the graphics get (particularly particle effects) the worse the gameplay feels and strains your eyes. Huge splashes of particle effects make it difficult to tell what's on the screen, not to mention the hundred other things animating at once. It's nice in a strategy game but in real time it's a mess.

@AgoristDad @TornadoOfTerror Jeff Gerstmann commented on this phenomenon on one of his more recent podcast episodes. How the minimum requirements of an upcoming game is 32 GB of RAM and like a 30 series Nvidia card from last gen. He just treated it like games were forever going to take more and more resources to play as some sort of gimme. It's insanity, you can't just keep expanding forever, eventually there has to be innovation or a collapse.

@reloadedAK @TornadoOfTerror I just only buy AAA titles I really love, and otherwise stick to older stuff on steep discount, classic stuff, emu, and indie stuff. Fuck supporting like 400 artists designing grass and shit just to age my gpu so I will buy another for things I didn’t care about to begin with.

@AgoristDad @TornadoOfTerror Even the AAA titles you love are getting that treatment in one way or another, leaving you in the dust pretty quickly after new hardware releases. When I get my new rig built I'm actually kind of excited what kind of emulation chops it will have. Can I play Infamous at a stable 60 FPS? That would be nice

@Aviz @TornadoOfTerror It’s pretty interesting stories honestly. You should read the stories of how Crash Bandicoot far exceeded the limitations of the PS1 through carefully calculating how many polygons would be onscreen at any given time and designing the levels based on forcing areas to be derendered. Similar story with Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver with how the game had to be able to deform two different world meshes at once plus it had no loading screens once you loaded your save, the game’s world was just stream loaded into ram nonstop.

@AgoristDad @TornadoOfTerror I watch development story videos on YouTube from time to time.My favorite is the woman who programmed the port of Doom to the Atari Jaguar, she was hired by some shyster who raised money through his church to make the game and had no idea about how any of it worked whatsoever.He had drawings of the sprites for new weapons he wanted to put in and he thought all she had to do was scan the paper and they would appear in the game. 😂

@reloadedAK @AgoristDad @TornadoOfTerror it would be interesting to quantify the problem, because it's not just the fact that there are so many polygons and pixels to worry about nowpoor architectural decisions, performance being a secondary concern at best, the ever-declining competence in the workforce, and probably other factors all have some effect. but it's hard to say how much each is contributing

Getting a team of high level programmers to make games that ACTUALLY WORK ON LAUNCH takes too long and costs too much money, so shoddily made inferior products it is.2. It would basically be admitting that the only types that would be able to handle game creation on that level would be intelligent Europeans and Asians People on John Carmack's level or around there will still have to be the ones to design the engines that build new games, but then they basically hand that well crafted tool to mental children to figure out and use and build with it.

@RMIV @TornadoOfTerror @reloadedAK You should go on GoG and get Quake 1, and then install Slayer’s Testament. It’s a great Doom 2016 demake in an insanely snappy engine. Ramping up difficulty plus the challenge maps and horde modes is just great for only a couple bucks for the game from 1995ish.
