There's a problem between the scale of the nation vs the individual. An individual may not like a fellow national because they do something annoying, so then they make a spurious claim to the authoritarian powers that removed the parasites, in order to remove an annoyance rather than a parasite. At the top level, the nation might be better overall, but at the basic level of everyday human interactions, people will turn on their fellow nationals if they rub them the wrong way despite sharing in the majority societal view. As people, our life is dominated by the daily experience that we undergo, while the national experience is more of an ideal, that realistically plays a less important role compared to the stuff we experience everyday. Most on the far left and far right recognize that Capitalism has problems. Even those with more mainstream political opinions will concede this with a line about it being "the best imperfect system" or some variant of that phrase.What if you take the parts of Capitalism that people like (meritocracy, innovation, abundance, choices) and mitigate the parts they don't like (collusion, exploitation, usury, extreme wealth disparity). That doesn't require authoritarianism, but it does require restrictions on trade and industry (sorry libertarians), possibly down to more local or regional levels. If country X is using literal child slaves to make their widgets for pennies on the dollar, maybe it's better to tarrif the hell out of them rather than hurt your nation's widget industry? Maybe Joe at the store would actually care to help customers if he had some profit sharing or was vesting into part ownership over time? Maybe we should tax non-productive speculation at a higher rate because it doesn't do anything of real worthy value, and the spillover effects from it harm industry and allow for hostile third parties to deliberately tank companies (hello $GME friends). Maybe more people would try and start businesses if the worst they could be should they fail is "$0" rather than tens or hundreds of thousands I'm debt. Maybe the general health of the country and its peoples will improve enough to where we wouldnt need to be at each other's throats all the time. None of this requires gulags or concentration camps.

When any petty bureaucrat can freeze a person's bank account, put them on the no-fly list, and direct a SWAT team to their location with a few clicks of a mouse, the ability of the state to exert coercive force has multiplied exponentially. I don't think any form of government could resist using this power to achieve its policy goals. The question is whether those policy goals benefit the average citizen or not.
