@weka https://twitter.com/nicksdjohnson/status/1604770533882892288I think the issue here is that there are a bunch of legal neutrality rules that have clear names ("first amendment", "common carrier", "section 230"), but what people *really* want to point to is the social norm of platform neutrality. And that social norm is connected to the legal rules, because the social norm is in part what caused those legal rules to get written, but it's also a separate social norm, and it doesn't really have a good name...

@vbuterin @weka The key point is in the difference between norms and rules, and how they are bootstrapped, growing from the most basic and essential principles (which is another concept to have in mind). Problems arise when the system gets too complex. Then, it is better to jettison the system and begin the bootstrapping again. This applies to most systems, and the result is not too bad, although somewhat inefficient.

@vbuterin the legal rules to an extent also create the social norms (perhaps a 2 way feedback loop?), since they encourage people to find the edges. I'm thinking eg Kim Dotcom or even smaller earlier players like The Pirate Bay saying "well we comply with this section of the law/our local laws, so all good"the moderation of this server is another interesting example... one answer is "we allow whatever is legal", lets you defer hard questions to lawmakers. but you can't get out of em forever!

@vbuterin @weka Your ambition to cure aging is inspiring. I read your Twitter bio on 11/29/21. The fable of the dragon tyrant caught my eye. After watching the video by CGP Grey my mind began racing. I played the almost 13 minute video on repeat for hours. It was as if I felt connected to the story. I wanted to become a part of the fable in any way that I possibly could. That very night, I decided to search until I found something….anything.
