@M0KHR@mastodon.radio at my previous place i had a proper 40m OCFD in the attic. that was the 2nd worst antenna i've ever used!the best was an 80m full wave loop.

@purple With a potent ATU, anything will tune but radiating is another thing. I'm trying out various "short" 80m antennas, they're all failures.

It is an interesting exercise with a #hamradio antenna tuner: Can it bring the SWR down to 1 with nothing whatsoever attached to the antenna port?Some can do this, others can't. Try yours, especially if you have a manual tuner.My Z-match is one of those that can do this.Those that can, match their own internal losses. The energy of the TX can go nowhere else, so heats the tuner.You get to choose which ones you like better. Good arguments exist either way.@M0KHR@purple

My rule oft thumb is: A versatile tuner can reasonably be expected to tune a 2 x λ/8 dipole, but (even) shorter than that becomes painful. I'm with you, @M0KHR.Of course, "too short" isn't fixed. I've occasionally managed 160 m CW QSOs with 5 W into even shorter dipoles - but mostly in the IARU HF CC contests, with European HQ stations at the other end that can "hear the grass grow", in the middle of the night when those ops are bored and patient.@purple
