Reddit has given a huge boost to the misinformation operation targeting GrapheneOS on their platform with their new blocking feature:https://reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/sdcsx3/testing_reddits_new_block_feature_and_its_effects/https://reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/yx0s1z/user_blocking_is_broken_and_ripe_for_abuse_by/The sockpuppet accounts used to attack GrapheneOS now start out blocking our account and others.#grapheneos #privacy #security #reddit #misinformation

They keep a list of all accounts which have previously debunked their attacks and block them on each of the sockpuppet accounts. Reddit's new blocking design means none of those people can see or respond to their posts or comments. Reddit gave them a way to prevent debunking it.

Here are two of the current sockpuppet accounts:https://old.reddit.com/user/C00KSP0IS0NAPPL3https://old.reddit.com/user/MousseOk2669They've cycled through dozens of accounts. They upvote and reply to accounts from each other. Each has the same patterns showing that it's the same small group of people doing it.

A recent example is falsely claiming GrapheneOS connects to gstatic.google.com and collector.github.com based on a link to this person's thread with a test:https://twitter.com/ComputersCoyle/status/1603641618871226368100% of default connections made by GrapheneOS are documented in https://grapheneos.org/faq#default-connections.

They also misrepresent our PSDS and attestation proxies which are explained in https://grapheneos.org/faq#default-connections.It would be easy for us to copy-paste a reply debunking it and linking to our FAQ. Reddit has blocked us doing that, giving a huge boost to this organized misinformation op.

Our FAQ section is the best source of information on this and has been verified to be accurate by many people. We don't give a detailed explanation of the DNS tests there but to be clear those connections are only made to your DNS resolver and don't in any way compromise privacy.

Android queries [random number].metric.gstatic.com via DNS-over-TLS to check if DNS-over-TLS works. This code is open source and it can be seen that it generates a fresh random number and does not make a connection to gstatic. It just checks if an uncachable (random) query works.

GrapheneOS could change this to query [random number].query.grapheneos.network instead when you have connectivity checks set to the default GrapheneOS mode. This wouldn't accomplish much beyond avoiding people who look at DNS queries rather than connections getting misled by it.

We do plan to change this to a GrapheneOS domain for aesthetic reasons despite no connection being made to it by the OS, but rather by the DNS resolver server.https://github.com/GrapheneOS/platform_bionic/commit/27e0ac7634ab20024ba801877f4a58faa8321960 was similarly added to explain this IP is only used to build an unused UDP socket object...

@GrapheneOS so why would people want to post "misinformation" about an operating system? Scare people away from using the project? Are they just bored Reddit people?

@thedylanarts There have been substantial attacks against GrapheneOS since 2018 aimed at destroying the project from groups trying to sell products based on forks of our code without most of the privacy and security hardening we provide.

@thedylanarts I suspect it's related to the long and tumultuous history of GrapheneOS and CalyxOS.I don't know anything about this specific case, but also make sure you do your own research. Both sides in the arguments have been notoriously strongly opinionated.@GrapheneOS

@aaravchen @thedylanarts There has been a blatant campaign of harassment, bullying and libel directed towards our developers paired with misinformation about GrapheneOS as a project. They spread endless fabricated stories and false claims about it. You're trying to portray this as a 'both sides' issue when GrapheneOS has never done anything like this in our whole history. You're demonstrating one example of how these attacks work. The attacks wouldn't do nearly as much harm without this.

@thedylanarts @aaravchen It doesn't make sense and isn't what is happening.GrapheneOS has never spread misinformation about other projects or engaged in vicious campaigns of bullying / harassment / libel against their developers. We don't fabricate stories about other projects and developers. You will not find endless posts, videos, etc. from GrapheneOS trying to harm other projects with fabrications as that group has been doing to us since they started their attacks back in 2018.

@GrapheneOS I'm no longer on Reddit but as of 2 weeks ago the privacy community on Reddit always talks about the benefits of GOS when asked. I have no desire to go back to Reddit but if your sub was for more than OS update notices I would be there answering noobs' questions. Maybe having an active community is the best way to counter the misinformation.

@catchphrase Our discussion forum is at https://discuss.grapheneos.org/. Our subreddit is closed to new posts due to organized attacks against our project on Reddit. It isn't going to be opened up to posts. We know exactly what's going to be happening if we do that and we don't have a large group of people willing to act as full time moderators and community support on Reddit without receiving any compensation since we don't have any funding available for this.

@GrapheneOS thank you for clearing that up. I didn't know there was money involved. It is sad to see stuff like that happen around open source projects because people know they can take advantage of them.
