I had a very bad reaction to something I came in contact with Wednesday night or Thursday morning. I had a large dose of erythritol Wednesday night and I've since read a lot of accounts (and a few journal article abstracts) about erythritol anaphylaxis. I'm running a diy allergen poke test with erythritol dissolved in water at the distal end, just water in the middle, and just the clean poker at the proximal end. This isn't to save money, I'm just curious.

@Hello57 The middle is just water and poker (no erythritol) The close one is just poker (no water or erythritol).

@ajdunevent I have a PhD/biochem and was at 1st a bit skeptical about erythritol allergy (see intro in below) but no, you are 100% correctexcept for the human brain, nothing is more complicated then immunologyhttps://aacijournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13223-022-00670-6

@Hello57 Yes, I read several abstracts that concluded erythritol can cause anaphylaxis in some people. I had a severe case of both urticaria (palpable, itchy, blanched when pressed) and purpura (dark, some slightly palpable, don't blanch when pressed) Thursday and Friday. By the time I could get to my doctor Friday afternoon, the urticaria had resolved so he only focused on the purpura and dismissed my suspicions about the possibility of anaphylaxis to erythritol. Therefore, I am running an independent investigation, lol. So far, it looks like the null hypothesis is winning. I am really hoping I don't need to consume it as a further study.

@ajdunevent I got hives the first time I went to India and then again a few weeks after I got back. Got a fever the second time and went to the emergency room where they gave me epinephrine, diphenhydramine, and ranitidine. The emergency physician who treated me called me the next day to make sure I was OK because he thought I might just drop dead. They never found out what it was, and it's never happened since.

@freakazoid My doctor told me to stop taking Truvada as PrEP, ordered blood and urine work, put me on prednisone, and told me to go to the ER if the purpura worsened or if I saw blood in my urine or stool. That might seem like the obvious reaction to finding your blood where you don't expect it but he knows I habitually avoid medical care so it was probably prudent to emphasize it to me, lol.I'm hoping he's wrong about the Truvada but I can cope if he's not.
