This issue affects me directly. I meet the medical criteria for SSI but can't apply until I run down to $2000 net worth, which would cover only 1.5 mo. food & rent. That's not nearly enough to last me for the 4-6 yr. required for the typical SSI application, denials, & appeals. The average applicant requires a lawyer & 2 appeals to receive benefits, which can be revoked on little notice.
