I think a big reason for me why Dwarf Fortress is a fun game to lose is what you built and lost doesn’t really go away, provided you keep playing on the same world in a different fort. It becomes a part of that world’s history, citizens and great works included. It’s also possible to come back and reclaim it… with the catch of having to deal with whatever horrible incomprehensible tragedy befell it. You can’t really capture that sort of replay value in a rougelike.Peeking at Legends mode after your current fortress has to be abandoned or falls feels like a bit of a reward in itself. It’s pretty likely while you’re were playing you picked up on some names you want to learn the context behind, such as gods or other specific people you’ve met. @deVoid Wear an anti-commie suit (despite the early players were truly dwarves), create an account on the bay12 forums - which you don't really need - and read the stories written there. The game is kind a matrix. I've been playing since 2014 and yet some hidden beings I've only come to know recently.

@deVoid @Heil_Honkler On the wilderness used to have creatures like "rhesus macaque" if I remember rightly, that are robbers of food and any object that aren't protected under any proper room with close doors. I don't know if they remove these creatures from Steam version.
