I had to use this trick with Mastodon like I had to with Twitter. The timeline of who I follow has too much bandwidth. I don't read it entirely, of course, and important but low-bandwidth accounts get lost in it. It's diluted. So I have a private list with just those accounts, so I don't miss their posts. Those are like a slow lane added next to the highway, the timeline that I actually watch.Low-bandwidth social media is what I actually like to read. I like the rest as serendipity.

@jacomyma Same here. A major annoyance is that the mobile apps (e.g. Tusky, and the official one) still have only very poor support for lists...

@tiago Nice! It might be worth writing something on how to repurpose social media for academics. I also have off-label uses of vanity metrics.BTW I just deleted the Twitter app from my smartphone, although I keep posting on Twitter. I don't see any of their ads now.I am sure better UX will emerge for Mastodon on every platform, now. We would pay for that.

@jacomyma @tiago I have started enabling notifications for accounts I want to follow more closely exactly for this reason. I never got into using lists on either of the sites but maybe it's time I do. (There's a "bell button" in the account profile, but I don't know if this depends on the client/web interface...)

@anwagnerdreas @jacomyma This is an interesting strategy โ€” but I must say my quality of life has improved a lot after I disabled all notifications (except phone calls and Signal) and switched to fully asynchronous mode. Now I have control of how I spend my time on things.

@tiago @jacomyma Oh well, to me, "notifications" is just that one middle column in masto's advanced web interface (or a sort of tab in tusky on the mobile). I have disabled email/push notifications, too. ๐Ÿ˜

@anwagnerdreas @tiago Ah! I understand better. The word "notification" is misleading! Interesting approach.

@jacomyma @anwagnerdreas BTW, something that may not be entirely obvious in the โ€œadvancedโ€ web interface is that you add as many columns as you want. This is useful to keep the lists in individual columns. So both approaches above may actually end up being equivalent.

@tiago @anwagnerdreas @jacomyma I can relate. Disabled notifications on my smartphone years ago (except Signal, texts and phone calls). Works fine for me!
