It will nullify the odious act known as DOMA, which had enshrined anti LGBTQ+ prejudice and discrimination into law.Federal recognition of same sex marriages, by statute, is an important safeguard, but we must still do more. @BinaryBolshevik It seems no system is perfect, we are not ruled by a monarch, the monarch just signs things in to law, once the house of lords has debated, voted and passed that law which is still debated and voted on in the house of commons.

If you go back to the gay rights stuff written in the 90s, most gays/lesbians didn't care about, or didn't want, marriage. Many wanted to throw off all traditional forms of relationships. Brenden O'Neil has a couple of papers that talk about this phenomenon.At the time it happened, I was for marriage equality. I took photos of people who were marching for marriage rights in Melbourne, Australia. But when it passed in the US first, I wasn't for it, because I felt it should have come from the legislature and not the supreme court.At least this is coming from the legislature, but with the way things have been going the past few years, I question my previous belief. Maybe the Baptists were right about Disney in the 90s. Where does this lead?

@BinaryBolshevik @AndyHarrison Good point, the labour party wantto replace the house of lords with an elected house. Looking at the US system, and midterms I got the impression if the democrats lost the senate then bringing in new laws or perhaps changes to existing laws etc would be more difficult. I am not too sure on the details of that though.

@mafeesh @BinaryBolshevik My post reply was to highlight the knife situation / stats in the UK. I think we can probably conclude a few points, the US has a gun problem the UK has a knife problem, neither of our ruling elite seem to be able to get a grip on it.One of the things that seems to come from some of the US shooting is mental health issues of those that carry out the shootings, seems to be a common thread there. I don't fully know what the causes are, but both countries seem to be failing.
