The rule for the last few days in GMail seems to be spam goes to the inbox while legitimate mail goes to the spam folder. It's literally an inversion of normality. When Wave was happening, Lars told me that spam was a solved problem they didn't have to worry about. The next morning the first three messages in my inbox were spammy Viagra ads.Spam wasn't a solved problem then, and it's not a solved problem now.

@robpike the thing that amazes me with it right now is that most metrics point to gmail being one of the highest spam sources. It seems really like that part in particular should be easy to substantially improve. For one thing locking out large volume mail sends for accounts without 2FA enabled.

@robpike and then there's the gate-keepering which results in keeping genuine email out, suffered by some of those who self host. For microsoft, it seems as if building registries is ingrained in their culture, submit your name, real world address, IP address, for consideration, if you're looking to send a lot of email to them, consider paying a 3rd party to vouch for you, with tiers based on message numbers.

@robpike .. only thing that has changed is that we can't realiably send e-mails because they're eaten by the gateways, the blocklists, the greylists and the spamfilters.

At Google back in the early days of GMail, I accidentally sat at lunch near some AOL visitors. They said something like, 90% of incoming mail messages deleted because of origin IP, 90% of what got through filtered out by spam management, and 90% of what was actually delivered never opened.Separating the gem from the ordure isn't easy, I'm sure, and thankless.

@robpike That's weird. Last winter a lot of my legit emails (gmail) were going into spam but sometime between then & now something changed to the point I hardly ever even look in spam because gmail doesn't do false positives. And just a handful of false negatives. I wonder what's different between you & me? I'm on a Dasher account if that makes a difference.

@timbray As my story about Viagra shows, the spam experience is tailored to the individual.

@timbray Ha, I realize that last note might be easy to misinterpret. All I meant was that Lars got no spam at all, and I got hammered by it.

@robpike Evidence is on your side but I confess to finding it a little surprising. I’d have thought these days you’d have a bunch of heuristics and a big honking ML model that would work pretty well horizontally.

@robpike Quite so.An enormous amount of time, money and talent was expended on anti-spam from the late 90s onwards - particular in the 2000 - 2010 period. We spent many, many millions a year on it and so did others. Over 80% of our infrastructure was dedicated to it.If a purely tech solution were possible, we'd have it by now. But, as long as it remains an evolutionary arms race, sophisticated whack-a-mole is as good as it gets.

@robpike I forward to Gmail and even mail classified as spam by rspamd, with Subject changed to include [SPAM] lands in the inbox.Or landed. I now reject only, no subject rewrite anymore.

@robpike I solved the problem of spam email by not using email anymore.
