Now that #signal #signalapp is losing their differentiators (basic encrypted chat with no nonsense, #SMS #MMS support to draw in the normies, no stories/shorts/TikTok trash), I'm starting to look at other options. What's everyone's favorite end to end encrypted chat product? Basic text, images, maybe small videos, offline archiving, degoogled Android and iOS friendly. No phone number or verification requirement preferred. I don't love #telegram or #Whatsapp, but with Signal jumping the shark I'm ready to consider them.

@GLFC Session is normie friendly its IDs are the only intimidating part.Otherwise your onky options are matrix or xmpp which require infrastructure.

@GLFC I use XMPP and Matrix. XMPP is good on android (conversations/blabber) and desktop (dino) but is horrible on ios. Matrix is fine if your friends don't mind a web app.Telegram client is open source and secret chats should be end-to-end encrypted, so don't be too afraid of using it if you have to.

@iska @GLFC I managed to keep Matrix running for two months before something inevitably broke. Got one fren to use it in that time. At this point, if I was gonna move to something else, it'd be trying to make IRC work again. XMPP is too weird to the few arms I can twist.

@idiot @GLFC XMPP is really easy to run and manage IME, it just werked and ran without issues for as long as I had my VPS, at next to no resource cost.
