A new Tusker beta build is out. Among other things, it includes improved timeline state restoration (as noted before, on first launch, the current position will be lost). And for VoiceOver users, it fixes a crash when scrolling through the local or federated timeline.

@shadowfacts thanks for another excellent update, especially excited about the VoiceOver and hashtag improvements. Maybe it's just me but I still can't figure out how to move right to the top of the timeline without having to scroll through everything. maybe there's a VoiceOver gesture I'm missing.

@dotsonapage there's a rotor action for jumping to the present on the timeline switcher control at the top of the screen

@shadowfacts huh, I'm not seeing it. there are buttons to switch between Home, Local and Federated, and to add filters, but I've tried swiping on all of them and none seem to have an actions rotor. maybe I need to change the app appearance or something? or turn on Hints?

@dotsonapage really? that's weird. I just tried it on the latest build and when I'm on the Home button, I can switch to the actions rotor and then swipe down to get to the Jump to Present actionwhat device/OS version are you on?

@shadowfacts I just closed and re-opened the app and the Jump to Present option was right there when I swiped on Home. weird. I'm using a 2022 iPhone SE running iOS 16.1.2.

@shadowfacts I find that sometimes, when opening a toot to view the thread, or choose the action to view the author‘s profile, then go back, I land on the toot of the similar action from the time before. This seems to be happening more often if I use the two finger scrub gesture in VoiceOver, though, not when double-tapping the Back button. Once, the current position was also lost after composing a new toot, but never when composing a reply via the VO action..

@Marco I'm not sure I understand; what do you mean by "the toot of the similar action from the time before"?

@shadowfacts if I open toot at position 10, or view that toot‘s author profile, then read on to toot 20, and do something similar there, then use the scrub gesture, I might end up on toot 10 again instead of 20.

@shadowfacts I haven’t installed it yet, but there’s been a bug at least in earlier builds I’ve been meaning to report where composing a post with an emoji in it makes it impossible to move the cursor around to edit

@noleli yeah, I’ve gotten occasional reports of that before. this build doesn’t have anything specific to address that, mostly because I haven’t been able to consistently reproduce it yet

@rowdyamerican indicating that a post is a reply is definitely possible. I’m hesitant to add an indicator for whether a post has replies for the same reason there isn’t currently a visual indicator: it’s not possible to accurately show that information, since your instance may not be aware of all the replies to a post from another. The button I believe you’re referring to expands/collapses all posts in the conversation. It only has an effect when there are posts that can collapse. I should add a better VoiceOver label to it.

@shadowfacts Thank you for the explanation about replies. That makes sense. Keep up the great work. I'm loving this client more and more with each new build.

@shadowfacts what I really appreciate about #MetatextApp are the counters beneath the boost/fav/reply buttons. Is this on the roadmap for #tusker too?

@daCaPo I show for the focused post in the conversation, but it's deliberately de-emphasized there. And if you tap the button to see the list, there's a warning about the inaccuracy

@shadowfacts @daCaPo I agree. I appreciate this feature, and wish Tusker had it. It helps me know if there are comments I might want to read (regardless of the count is accurate) without needing to constantly click into each post to check manually.

@shadowfacts @daCaPo I just found the Mammoth app and so far really love it. It’s still in beta but you can try it out if you want (it has post counters in the footers as well as swipe-right to return to the previous screen, which is important to me) https://mastodon.social/@JPEGuin/109756759819116790

@shadowfacts @daCaPo excellent news! I’ve tried so many apps (ivory, ice cubes, toot!, tooot, Mastoot, woolly, mercury), and although Metatext is still my # 1, Tusker is my fallback for things that Metatext doesn’t do (like drafts!). I understand things are still in development across most of the apps, so I’m looking forward to seeing the updates! Thank you for your hard work!
