This is what I mean when I mock the "TikTok is spyware" crowd. Elmo just gave a bunch of dubious political trolls backend access to Twitter. We should be far more concerned with what we upload, less where we upload it to. Assuming that TikTok is bad because China and other platforms are good because not China ignores the fact that ownership is temporary but data is forever.#infosec #cybersecurity #privacy

@malwaretech There are specific concerns the TikTop APP as opposed to webserver is dangerous. Concern is spyware written by China's goverment and distributed as part of the app.I will go father: the Facebook app has been proven to in at least one update reset privacy settings to defaults and "sync" user's phone contacts to Facebook before a user could do anything about it.NO closed-source, corporate-controlled app can be trusted. If you need to use one, exile it to a separate "quarantine" phone that can be tethered to your main phone.

My threat model didn't explicitly cover "the most unhinged person you've ever seen has just bought your social media platform of choice and all your data along with it". But luckily, that is implicitly covered by "every platform will likely be compromised at some point".

@malwaretech this is certainly true. Do you think in a few decades time social media platforms will be recognized as public utilities?

@SethPFR @malwaretech Social media SHOULD already have been been recognized and regulated as public utilities. Electricity was barely invented before Public Utility Commissions were formed in the US to make sure the new new resource was shared equably among citizens. Same with the initial reaction to broadcasting. Though over time both have been whittled away.

@SusanKraemer IMHO this is not the correct way to look at it. The real public utility that has gone unrecognized is Internet access, and we should have addressed that problem a decade ago rather than still have the issues we have with last mile connections today. If anything we should be trying to replace centralized social media with decentralized protocols like ActivityPub (which is what Mastodon uses and is how I am able to communicate from this server to the one you are on) rather than trying to nationalize the former.@SethPFR @malwaretech

@malwaretech do we actually know what happened to Elon? I mean he was always a weirdo but it has definitely gotten worse over the years.Maybe a few too many LSD/DMT experiences that were supposed to free his mind and give him new entrepreneurial inspirations? 🤔

@wall_e @Flies4no1 @malwaretech suggestion of an alternate perception of events from the aerial view:causality shiftscrews were loose which attracted grimesgrimes thought she saw someone aligned with herrelationship showed grimes’ assessment incorrect over time as hem is a black hole pulling people into dark places and grimes has enough self respect and skill to extract herself from that terminal orbitscrews were already coming off, grimes departing knocked them out of hem, mask off

@Aphrodite @wall_e @malwaretech Absolutely. Add that grimes is his third wife. And midlife crisis. And no one around him he listens to.

@Flies4no1 @wall_e @malwaretech lack of people he listens to is a feature not a bug. authoritarian leaders do not listen to subordinatesthird wife feeds into perception described of long term problem - wives seen as subordinate, authoritarian leaders do not listen to subordinates midlife crisis only applies in that the one constant he knows he cannot control is time and thus his tendencies have a best by datehe moves fast and breaks people
