I agree the cap in the OP is way out of date. The military is too far gone to be relied upon in the event of civil war.Also, while civil wars tend to be fought by a very small percentage of the population, they require the cooperation of a large percentage. The remaining ~90% have to be either neutral or supporting the rebels for them to succeed.I'm not sure warring states is realistic though. I'd like it to happen but I don't think the states are independent enough to pull it off. In the case of chinese history that happened before china unified.

Going by history's example, they'll make a deal with some gang or other (likely a narco-syndicate or two) to smash whatever heads they want smashed. They'll keep playing the gangs against each other until one of them realises they can just take over.

Then, scandal. Harassment by FBI. Attacks by antifa. Media character assassination. Maybe even a real assassination attempt.That alone would only increase his popularity, but imagine if they got the receipts. Real proof of foul play from the government. Damning evidence of illegal activities. That would supercharge his supporters and gain fence-sitters as well. It would completely delegitimize the current government. I don't see it happening anytime soon, but as time goes on an American Caesar not only becomes more likely, it becomes inevitable.

Trust and support in the government is at an all time low today versus back then when people had faith in the government.They could kill someone yes, but they'd do it in a sloppy way that would cause more problems than it would solve.I think part of the issue though is you are thinking short term while I am referring to 20, 30, 50 years from now. As America collapses they won't have the same resources to carry out these gay ops. Tech is a serious concern but as the field is staffed by more and more browns it is going to have serious flaws. They can keep snuffing out potential leaders, but all it takes is for one to succeed to completely collapse the post-WWII world order -- or at least deal serious damage to it.

That was sloppy, and they had incriminating texts between Liz Truss and Anthony Blinkin.They had the ability to take it out...but they exposed themselves. Plus they left one of the pipelines functional so it didn't really achieve their goals. That's the sort of thing that could happen. Oh they take them out alright. But it will be obvious who did it and the population will sour even more to the government. It is possible there could be a "spare pipeline" in the form of a second-in-command who can immediately step up and exploit the scandal.I'm not saying a new Hitler is going to arise tomorrow. It is just that these people aren't all powerful and they do make mistakes. Like Godfrey said they can't keep doing this forever as America deteriorates.
