We have two trees near each other that are bent like this. One has what looks like a cairn next to it. (In that pic, you can see the other bent tree in the background.)This looks like they were bent intentionally, right? Or do trees sometimes grow like this? 🤔

@MountainJay as I understand it, the native american tribes bent trees as wayposts for migratory trails. I'm not sure how many of those survive.

@MountainJay When I was a kid, I actually saw in a textbook that Indians used to mark trails or something like that.I guess they did it when they were going to fish to plant corn.

@MountainJayCoud be natural damage could have been intentionally done. Kinda looks like a bench. Near a grave. Check back at midnight with a ouija board and some candles.

@MountainJay Those are called Indian trail trees. This is probaby one of the largest known and is near where I live. That bend is taller than a man. The trees would indicate and point to a location of importance.

@MountainJay what part of the country are you in? Do you know the species of tree? sometimes when a tree blows over, are they facing the same direction? the sucker, small new branch on the trunk, will become the dominant and essestially turn into the trunk, storm blow overs are pretty common.

@MountainJayUsed one long time ago. Very odd experience. Board said some stuff that was strange. Later when my buddy and I snuck out at night, I had a run in with a wierdo driving a beater car with what we described as a jousting rod mounted to it. Guy yelled some shit at us that was eerily similar to what the board had,'said'. Lil traumatic.Haven't used one since.

@Rollinator — I believe it’s some kind of oak tree. We’re in the Missouri Ozarks, actually about 30 miles from the Trail of Tears route. I doubt these trees are that old though.

@MountainJay My best friend and neighbour growing up had a tree in his yard where the trunk split in to two about four feet up. Embedded right in the fork was a brick.I can't remember the exact story but I feel like I remember him telling me it was done on purpose. So if you can use a brick to force a tree to fork, you can probably do something similar to make it grow like this.Looks like a natural bench or something.

@MountainJay they dont look old enough, they would would use a more obvious sign like slashing or tree marking, How close are you to the sea? They could have been deliberately shaped to create the lumber for ship hull framing, but to me they look natural.30 to 50 years old judging by diameter. We have 159 yr old trees in our drive and they are too wide to hug

@MountainJay The trees were trained as saplings. Sometimes this is done intentionally to make a chair or point to a location. Here's another example, Poland's crooked forest. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Krzywy_Las_-_Nowe_Czarnowo_2.JPG
