Another example is Marjorie Taylor Greene.. 😠 How can you host a platform and have people like her on it spreading lies and hate constantly to millions of people :amaze: That's no 'freedom of speech' but provoking people against each other.. @stux When fascists like Elon Musk say “free speech” it’s never about free speech - it’s newspeak for hatespeech and fascist propaganda. When these people say “freedom” it isn’t about freedom at all - it’s newspeak for violating other people’s rights without being held accountable. A modern, open society cannot tolerate these abuses of language without devolving back into the dark ages, so I’m glad these abusers are kept out of Mastodon.

@stux I puzzle over this issue fairly often. It’s similar to the “why are companies allowed to advertise and sell “health” products that don’t do what they claim to do?” question. The only time they are brought to task is if the product actually kills or maims someone. Never mind the long term damage they cause both physically and to the wallet. If I understand it correctly, these have been claimed as “free speech” and fall under a “buyer beware” legal jurisprudence.

@stux I believe that is the attitude of many when giving someone like MTG a voice: “buyer beware.” Theoretically, the push back is supposed move people to understand she is often full of shit. But no one seems to have an answer for what we do to protect innocents from it. I grew up politely looking away, being aware that my beliefs are not absolute, and working hard to be kind. That approach clearly has not worked. Now, I challenge the hate and anger at every opportunity I get.
