I guess Pine based boards are now the future.Loved me some RPi, but wow, that was tone deaf.

@thegibson Hardkernel's ODROID brand of SBCs are also very capable and often outperform the RPi boards.

@jasonnab @TheGibson idk about performamce but I can confirm Odroid C4 is a pretty nice board. It has some drawbacks but overall feels pretty solid.

@wolf480pl It's definitely one of their nicer boards. What kind of drawbacks have you seen?

@jasonnab - No builtin audio jack (forgot to check that before ordering). Can be easily worked around with a USB soundcard, or less easily by attaching an I2S codec chip to the audio header, which I haven't tried.- Kinda regret not getting HC4 instead cause real storage would've been nice- Couldn't get video decode accel to work without Xorg- Distro support is kinda unclear. I got an Armbian and it works well so far (except video accel), but it came pretty bloated, had to uninstall stuff

@wolf480pl Ah yeah those all add up to a bit of a disappointment.Video decode stuff is always tricky, and I definitely don't like installing X11 if not needed... but if it helps get HW Decoding going 🤷 Distro stuff yeah is always a mixed bag. I hate to be a parrot, but I found an Arch Linux based ARM image with explicit support for the C4. Maybe that would help in general debloating, but unsure about HW decoding. Seems to work with mpv at least?https://archdroid.org/en/images/odroidc4/

@wolf480pl I only keep parroting Arch because it basically provides an easy assumption you'll get a mainline, updated kernel, and won't be stuck in any kind of update or security hell.

@jasonnab yeah, I use Arch on desktop and used to use Arch Linux ARM on a BeagleBoard. I kinda wanted somethign Debian-based here, since I got used to running Debian on servers with unattended security updates. But that's not something I'd want to do on a microSD card anyway...

@wolf480pl I've been a year/two now with Arch Linux as a server OS, on multiple machines, no issues so far :)I believe pacroller is the "unattended upgrades" equivalent for Arch, but it's definitely some level of risk vs the stability a stable branch of Debian brings, so I totally get your position. My apologies for any assumptions possibly made!Agreed that a MicroSD may not be able to handle that, or poop out midway... I moved to an external USB setup now for SBCshttps://github.com/isjerryxiao/pacroller

@wolf480pl @jasonnab If you like the idea of a Debian based ARM option have you checked out Armbian ?

@PublicLewdness @jasonnab see upthread, that's what I use currently. The problem with Armbian is the way it's opinionated. Now, being opinionated on its own is not a bad thing. Debian itself is opinionated and once you learn how to cooperate with its opinions, it can be very comfy and get you very far.But Armbian adds its own layer of opinionated tools on top of Debian, with a *different* opinion, an opinion that goes against Debian's opinion.

@PublicLewdness @jasonnab After you're done with the initial setup you can mostly ignore it (until you need device tree overlays I guess, I'm yet to mess with that tho), but the initial experience for me was like- why?- how do I skip this?- I skipped it, what was it meant to do?- oh, not that much actually, but why do it in such a roundabout way?- wait, it's doing what?- why?? you had all these means of doing it and yet you chose to roll a hack instead?? why???
