@selea Gnome software center in particular is a terrible first impression of fedora for beginners.

@selea which #thinkpad is this? I "just" exchanged my 2014 one with a new one this year (after waiting > 6 months for it) and so far, I have mixed feelings with #debian bullseye and bookworm on it.All in all the T14 Gen 2i is mostly good enough for me, the battery is small but is has the bad tendency to not always wake up from (legacy) S3 and forcing a hard shutdown 😩

@selea I think if you want relatives to successfully use Linux you should leverage its amazing remote administration capabilities.

@selea I agree. It's frustrating and a bad user experience. Additionally for me anytime i click to install a update the UI refreshes automatically and i have to click Update again to actually get it to update. A little surprising for me how bad it is considering how popular #Gnome seems to be.

@Pjol @selea The gnome-software devs are working on making the UI more responsive, and fix a lot of the UX papercuts. The main issue is that Software has to load and display (quickly) *a lot* of software metadata, so it either stays in memory (and people complain about resource usage) or it has to rebuild the data (and people complain because it's slow). It's mainly two people working part time on the project, so help with profiling and performance is very much welcome.

@Pjol @selea If you're using Fedora Workstation, you also are dealing with RPM/PackageKit. With Silverblue and Flathub, the search and responsiveness of Software is a lot better. Still lots to improve, of course, but it's definitely more reliable.

@ebassi @Pjol Yeah I am using Workstation, and I suspected that the RPM/DNF part is what is causing stuff to be slow. But honestly, it is the only issue that I have with fedora. My system has never been so stable. Hopefully the error reports that I send helps :)
