There was this guy that wanted to debate me about how his hardened Gentoo setup was much more secure than OpenBSD. I think I made some great counter arguments but then he just ghosted the conversation. Oh well, one thing for sure is that he had to do all this extra, complicated stuff to harden his install, and I just installed OpenBSD. One little nasty Linux kernel bug or an error in a config and his whole system is compromised. I'd rather leave that stuff to the experts, not randos with snake oil solutions and hand waiving statements in internet forums.

@dc@pl.starnix.network I've encountered this many times over the years. Some people fall into the trap of more technical complexity = betterAnd with tech that's not always true, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Less is more. Like solene does brilliant things with computing and IT, when you read her blog post, it's always really simple straightforward methods that work.

@dc@pl.starnix.network What puzzles me is all this X security fuss is generally psychical security issues, not remote. Remote issues can occur through browser exploits, but pledge and unveil in OpenBSD really can mitigate that, plus never running a root terminal or root tty (yes if an attacker gains access through a browser exploit, they can access a tty if it's logged into root or user, an OpenBSD dev explained it to me once.)

@dc@pl.starnix.network That's the snowden approach to security, have no single point of failure, and just assume that you can get hacked and limit the amount of damage that can be done to by an attacker. It's like a burgler going through the trouble of breaking into a mansion and they finally open a safe and it's empty 😆

@rootbsd as i have always said, its about minimization you cant be 100% security but you can always do the best things you can ( using a free and open software phone with a mostly open modem)

@rootbsd only the userland is open on the modem (it says in the git hub) i did update already and Biktor gave me a custome image becuase verizon keept sending fake alerts basically and he fixed it for me

@dem@rojogato.com @dc@pl.starnix.network The thing that sucks about the Pinephone is that it's not crazy ex proof. When you don't answer your phone immediately when they call you, and they start blowing up your phone it makes the software bug out. 😩
