I always forget with arch based distros, you've got to install any software you'll ever need when you first install it, and never ever install or update anything ever again unless you're prepared to re-install the whole os from scratch.

@OpenComputeDesign I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not with this take. As it isn't at all accurate.

@OpenComputeDesign Can't say that's been my experience on Manjaro or Garuda.

@GeeksLoveDetail I suppose maybe if I installed every update as it came, but as I tend to wait a few months between updates, and sometimes install software without first updating my whole system, my arch installs are nearly always broken within a year, purely from hitting the "apply" button in Add/Remove Software. My little sister had an identical experience when she had Manjaro on her computer.

@OpenComputeDesign But why would you wait months before doing updates? That's just asking for trouble for any OS, also, as for Manjaro they also hold back packages which more often causes more issues than not.

@OpenComputeDesign It’d be rather presumptuous to say “you must be doing something wrong”, but that’s really not how it goes for everyone.

@GeeksLoveDetail I've never had an issue with doing that on Debian or OpenBSD. Updates rarely help my workflow, sometimes break it, and I cannot be arsed to reboot.Besides which, I have many computers I use at different times. A drawing tablet, a writing laptop, a programming laptop, a gaming desktop, a server, an ultra low power desktop for when the power bill gets too high, etc etc. And many go unused for months at a time. And I really appreciate being able to just pick them up and use them after all that time. And for the most part, arch based distros (and especially manjaro) are the ones that give trouble. debs and bsds are just rock solid.

@anjune It's kinda funny, usually whenever I say "Agh! I've had x problem on (usually manjaro)" there's always people like "yup, been there all the time!". But now that I say it's fragile, no one agrees :P

@OpenComputeDesign I’ve had problems due to the breakneck pace of upgrades, just not as a matter of course or ones that would force me to reinstall.

@anjune Well, I don't know what to say. I've had well over a dozen Manjaro installs, and a few other arch based installs, and treating them now different from any other distro, not a single one is still fully functional.

@OpenComputeDesign Why so many of them, if they always disappoint? Just stubbornness? :blobcatthink:

@anjune Partially, yes, partially because I install it on a bunch of systems at once before I knew, and partially because manjaro arm would be one of the absolute best arm distros if it weren't for it's arch/manjaro problems.
