Cops should go 3 or 4 times as long to prison for murder than any other.. They have the responsibility to prevent it but in some countries it looks like they are the criminals. How can people thread each other like crap while we're all the same species, it's terrible! Maybe... we hoomans just need alien overloads who keep us in check since it seems we can't handle it ourselfs

@stux I'm counting on what I see - people feel strongly enough about building communities. I think we've seen what isolation is up close and prefer to have alternatives.We want a robust infrastructure for the communities we built in walled gardens paid for by VC money over two decades. We've tasted diversity and freedom to pick our tribe regardless of where they happen to be on the planet. Fediverse may be a waypoint on the journey, but we're not going back :D

@stux IMHO the point of prison etc. should be rehabilitation, not punishment.The problem is that as a cop or politician, you have a better chance not to go to prison at all. So there is less incentive not to break the law.I think we just need a system that actually tries to hold these people to the same standards as everyone else.Like a sort of "counter-police", made up of people who understand that police is a necessary evil.

@stux Part of the problem, at least in the US, is that the courts have ruled that the police don't have a duty to protect citizens. @RADC @stux I'm not entirely sure how much I agree with that. Judging by the fact that we haven't encountered any real evidence of intelligent life's existence anywhere but on Earth, it is pretty reasonable to assume that, if it exists, it is extremely far away from us. Based on the assumption that they are so far from us, any encounter we might have with them would probably happen as a result of their ability to arbitrarily manipulate all of the forces of nature

@stux Aliens would have to be very smart and very advanced to be able to travel such long distances through vast deep space. They would have undoubtedly seen many historic, well-intentioned experiments that ended badly. So, hopefully they would have grown wise enough to have a non-interference directive.We humans need to deal with our short comings *on our own,* or the lessons won't stick.
