It was an interesting little rabbithole because this whole realm is a layer of Medieval fanon on top of stuff they took directly from the Classical era, which had absolutely none of this in it because, well, that wasn't their religious framework at all. There was no "upper heaven" back then, seemingly. (I've always wondered to what extent Judaism influenced Plato's notions of "God", I don't think it was as much as people posit though.)To me, when I look at this picture, I see reinforcing architecture. Yahweh is surrounded by orders of spirits that sing his praises because he needs that reinforcement: He's not a natural force.By comparison, my favourite boy can be shunned so hard that his entire element is being shunned, entire civilizations can go on purges where they scrub his images off temples and shit, he can be maligned, rejected, painted over in murals, replaced with other gods, banned, consigned to apocrypha. But he's still there, because there is still a wolf beyond your campfire, there are still strangers beyond your comfortable civilization that will lure you into pits full of spikes and check your pockets for shiny things when they're done.

@hermit @mute i feel confident saying that spare knows well enough that this is bullshit while he's writing it, and i guess our point of disagreement is that he thinks a bullshit method for ending up with sigils is better than nothing, where to me i think you need to figure out the real method or you're drawing footguns. i guess some people are into this method, and if they have the restraint to make this work without fucking themselves up then godspeed i guess. but looking at this i instantly knew that it was total bullshit and not something i had any desire to fuck around withi think the lazy thing an #IFuckingLoveScience type would say about more inspired sigils is just like, they're bullshit charlatanism, but that doesn't make sense to me. even if the author was thinking of running a scam, whatever they ended up drawing came from /somewhere/ and means /something/ unless they just copied it from somewhere else.looking at, like, the sigils of angels / lesser key of solomon / john dees ensigns of creation, or to start expanding outward, the imagery present in "the vision in the voice" feels like something that fits exactly nowhere in these attempts to describe them. are things this complicated and nuanced something that someone drew along a recipe and plunked into their subconsciousness like a stone? does anyone feel confident that they could sit down and draw and write like this ex nihilo? while i do find it easier to do automatic writing or just keep speaking and see what happens, it doesn't tend to end up like this. drawing was always harder for me, which might be why i found sigils especially evocative. maybe also because, aside from possibly some authors like samuel beckett / hilda hilst /gōzō yoshimasu, it's extremely difficult to give writing a sense of latent power while also being terse

Then if you're curious enough, you watch it again and pay close attention because every line of dialogue means something. And then that's the big joke. Paying attention. Lol. He worked extremely carefully on that movie.
