Can someone please point me to a resource that explains who sees a given post? The visibility (public, unlisted, etc) is pretty obvious. I am more curious about mentions in the post and how that affects who sees it. Does the position of mentions (eg the very first character is an @ followed by a legit username) impact who sees the post?Given replies (in_reply_to), new posts, visibility settings, mentions, and mention position there are a lot of combinations - looking for definitive rules.

@jswright61 this will hopefully help: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacy

@james that is helpful, thank you, but I'm looking to dig a little deeper. Especially on how mentioned accounts affect visibility of the posts.

@james let me come clean here and admit that my expected behavior is based on how Twitter handles this. Which is problematic. I will say that, even though it's a bit convoluted, I've come to appreciate the nuanced way Twitter handles it.

@jswright61 presumably the “Twitter behaviour” you refer to is stuff like not showing tweets where they start with the handle of someone you already follow - is that right?

@james you're on the right track, but on TW if a Tweet starts with a handle it will be shown to that handle as well as followers who follow BOTH that handle and the Tweet author. But that is exactly the type of behavior I'm referring to.(This is why it's common to see tweets that start with a . followed by a handle. In that case the author wanted to reference the handle first, and alert them, but have the Tweet shown to all of the author's followers)

@jswright61 yeah, I expect there's some iteration that could be done to the home timeline to facilitate that -- perhaps even just on the client side.

@james Thanks for the time and attention you put into this back and forth. All for a n00b who is wondering why Mastodon doesn't work more like Twitter 🤷🏻♂️.

@jswright61 not at all. I think a lot of people will be experience a bit of UX friction as they come over to Mastodon, but hopefully the "expectation realignment" isn't too painful. And I'm sure there are aspects that Mastodon could add without compromising the base premise (This Isn't Twitter™️ 😆)
