Really wishing Mastodon weren’t Ruby and Sidekiq.

@joshua When you're a hammer, everything turns into a Rails project.

@joshua True story: At a previous place of employment, they had to shuffle files between a couple different accounting programs. One was decrepit and well beyond the end of its life, and it used a janky/proprietary (but still plaintext) file format. In order to make that conversion easier for their bookkeeper, they built … a Rails app.

@joshua It was a full-blown webapp that served no other purpose than to receive an uploaded file in one plaintext format, convert it to the other, and let her download the result.

@joshua The guy who built it was long gone, and one of the other guys left knew enough Ruby to support it. About once a quarter he'd get sucked in to a daylong dance with gem dependencies because something would update and all hell would break loose.
