Possible, but I've seen enough images and videos of emaciated escapees that made it into China or South Korea to think it can't all be fake. Some of the interviews that really stick in my mind was a documentary made by Chinese expat filmmakers where they talked to escapees and also Chinese people who take payment to smuggle folks out, but not all of what I said is from western sources, no. I didn't say anything about prisoners. I was referring to escapees to mean people who fled the country for China or the South. China is easier to be smuggled to but riskier long term because if the Chinese find you they will send you back, IIRC.

The caricatures looked like a cross between Nazi propaganda of what a German and a Jew looks like, monstrous blond white men with huge noses. They are not calling them Jews though, to Asians European men have big noses and they were mocking that. Later on, the guy actually gets attacked while walking down the street specifically because he was White.I understand the tendency to run into the arms of your enemy's enemy, but remember that they hate you just the same.
