I was a pre-teen when I was invited over to a 'friends' house, which is a long story for another time. I remember my mother driving me up this long, narrow mountain path. The house at the end of the road didn't look like one people would be living in - wood paneling was falling off, the roof was visibly sunken under the snow, windows were cracked and shades broken. Mud pathways formed from the house doors to cars and sheds, bordered by a foot or so of snow. It was too late to go back now though; with only 2 houses at the end of this long, steep street, and one of which was actually abandoned, our presence was quickly alerted to the household occupants by the German Shepherd tied up out front. My 'friend' rushed out the door to see me. My sleepover had officially began.Part 1/?(All pictures stolen from the internet - I didn't have a camera at this age) Unironically the house in the picture looks much nicer than the house I had to sleep in.

I walked up the sagging front steps, barely able to hear my friend over the barking; "Be careful of Killer, he's a really dangerous dog!" she tried yelling over the dog barking behind us.Killer was a fluffy German Shepherd, who I found spent most of his life tied up to a large pine tree in the front of the house. You could tell how far his chain would allow him to travel, as there was about 2 ft radius of a perfect circle of mud before it gave way to the icy covered snow. Killer didn't have a water bowl or food dish, although I did witness the mother toss dog food onto the mud from the window of the house while Killer attempted to clean it up, reaching as far as he could from the end of his ridiculously hefty metal chain. There was no cover for this dog - He seemed to spend most of the winter days trying to sit on the roots of the pine tree.My friend would make sure to carefully usher me away from Killer, even putting herself between the dog and I when we had to walk by, despite Killer being kept quite a safe distance from the house. My friend, who lived with this dog since it was a puppy, was terrified of him, and thus I was terrified as well.Part 2/?

The house was cold - the only heating was a single pellet stove in the family room. Her bedroom was small, but I was almost overjoyed by that - our body heat alone would warm it up a little easier. However, the overwhelming smell made me gag. It was a very strong mix of must and feces. She slept on a daybed by the window. In the middle of her room was a giant dog crate, with a smaller crate on top of it. The large crate was empty, with only mud on the bars and bottom tray. The top crate, however, had a dilute grey tabby kitten, probably around 4 months of age. There was no water or litter in this crate, not even a blanket. Luckily, my friend opened the cage and let the cat out, where it immediately raced to the litter box in the corner of the room. The litter box was so completely full of cat shit that I couldn't actually see any litter in there anymore. The cat was disgusted by it too; he balanced on the sides of the box, careful to not touch the feces, and let loose. His diarrhea was audible, and the smell was atrocious and immediate. I then realized why shit was actually spilling out of the sides of the litter box. Once done with it's bout of liquid shit, he ran over to get attention. I could feel the spine ridges and hip bones on this kitten, and his eyes were sunken and dull. I know my friend has had a poor time in the past with kittens, and I figured there was probably a bad disease around here that they catch."Wanna see something neat?" She asked as she opened a small bag of chips. She ate one, and she gave one to the cat which gladly ate it up. "Isn't that funny? He eats chips!"I asked if the cat has any cat food that it eats, as I'm now realizing I'm not seeing any bowls of food or water. "He doesn't need that, he does just fine on potato chips! All my cats had eaten mostly chips"Annoyed at my accusations that cats should eat cat food, she decided the kitten had enough 'floor time' and put him back in his crate for the day.Things were starting to make sensePart 3/?Not that it makes it better but I think pic rel is actually a cake with melted chocolate bars. Actually I think that makes it worse.

TW - Animal AbuseSo late at night, we haven't eaten yet, and this bitch doesn't own a microwave for religious reasons and doesn't know how to use a stove. I had to go to their kitchen and make food for us.I know so far this sounds like a hoarding house but it really isn't. It's small and run down, but there isn't an outrageous amount of crap around. Some crap and nick knacks and shit, but not so much that you can't see what you're doing or what you need. I've been in their kitchen a few times that day. This time I'm actually cooking in it. I'm waiting for the water to boil for some mac n cheese. I notice a musty smell in the kitchen - sort of like my friend's room, but not nearly as bad. I assume the odor has permeated to the rest of the house. I sit down at the kitchen table waiting for the water to boil, and put my foot up on my knee. My foot hits a metal crate. I don't flinch. A second later the metal crate moves. I nearly piss myself.I hop up and peer inside the crate - I saw it nestled in the dark corner before, with newspapers and magazines stacked on top of it - but I never thought there was anything in it. What I saw looked like a very large, dirty mop. But it was a living creature, probably an old english sheepdog with a very dirty, matted coat. The dog didn't respond to my calling, didn't even respond to my touch. If it wasn't for the fact that he'd occasionally shift his body weight, I would have thought he was dead. The crate he was in had a wire bottom, and I could see the mats in his fur began to conform around those wires. I lifted a paw, and the matted underside was like a grid. His coat was grimey and oily to the touch. His face was hidden behind his unkept coat. My friend comes in, clearly angry that I'm paying attention to the 'kitchen dog' and not cooking. I was still in shock that I never noticed the dog was even in there before. Part 4/?

It's finally time to end day 1. What a fucking relief. My friend and I have to stay in another room while her mom gets Killer in the crate. For some reason, this dog that everyone has been telling me to be extremely cautious of, is going to be sleeping in a crate in a tiny room with 2 kids. Cool. I am reminded to not touch the dog through the crate because 'he will bite your hand off'. At my feet is a dangerous, aggressive dog. Right above my head is that litter box that is, quite literally, over-flowing with shit. I didn't even have enough space to stretch my legs - I had to lay in a fetal position. I also neglected to bring literal sub 0 camping gear because I thought I'd be in an insulated house, so I had one measly little blanket to cover myself with, as I was hit with the draft from the ill-fitted window. I was frozen to the core, with a constant fear that my feet might poke through the dog cage and get torn apart, or I might straighten my back and cover my head in cat feces. After a few hours I realized there was no sleep for me.I sat up and hunched over, shivering under my blanket for warmth. My friend was fast asleep. The only thing awake and suffering with me was Killer, as he looked up from where he was laying down to see what I was doing.Fuck it, I'm miserable anyways, if I get bit maybe I can go to a hospital that has central heating. I put a finger through the crate and began rubbing his flank. The dog jumped up and quickly turned around to face me. I shot my hand back close to my chest, worried I'd get nipped. But then I noticed the dog wasn't snarling or growling, in fact he was rubbing his chest against the crate. I started to pet his chest, then his neck, and eventually his head. The entire time, this dog didn't show an ounce of aggression, although he was attention starved and began to whine when I stopped petting him. So I spent the rest of the night petting him through the crate. When my friend woke up, I acted like I just woke up as well. My all-night petting session with the dog I wasn't supposed to even touch was never mentioned.Part 5/?

TW - Animal AbuseThe next day I was dragging along, exhausted from staying up all night and from all the horrors I've seen so far - horrors I never knew could exist in my small world.I was about to witness one last, horrendous event.Seeing that I seemed off, my friend tried to cheer me up. Knowing I loved animals, she took out her secret weapon. From under her bed, she pulled out a blue cat carrier. She opened the door, and from it she pulled out a yellow chihuahua. For a full 24 hours, there was a chihuahua being kept under the bed, that I didn't know about. She let the dog out for some floor time. I am almost in tears. My friend thinks it's because I love small dogs so much, that it made me so happy. The cat carrier seemed to have had a newspaper lining at one point, but has been more or less plastered like decoupaged to the bottom of the carrier with urine. There was no bowls in the carrier, but the inside was a brownish color I imagine from feces that was left in there. I wouldn't say the carrier was even large enough for the small dog to turn around it. How could that thing stay in complete darkness for so long, without even making a sound? He was so excited to be let free of his prison, that his penis was extruded from the sheath. I understood at my age, that this is not something that dogs can really control or understand. My friend, who was a year older than me, squeed in a weird mix of disgust and delight."Ewwww look at his penis! Isn't that gross? Stop being gross!" She grabbed the dog and, with her thumb and index finger, began to *pinch* the dog's penis, in hopes that would make it 'go away'. The dog, who was just happy to be out from under the bed, let out a squeal of pain but never tried to bite, and his penis was still unsheathed.I told her that the dog can't help it, and she said that if she can't make the dog behave by pinching it, he'll have to go back in the crate. After a few more attempts of squeezing the tip of the penis, which I feel she took too much pleasure in, she gave up and tossed the dog back in the crate. "He always does that, it's why I can't have him out so much" She finishes the event off with just tossing some kibble onto the piss and shit covered floor of the carrier for the dog to eat, as well as splashing some water on the carrier floor.I went into this sleep-over unaware of the harshness of the world. I left not only knowing it exists, but witnessing it second-hand. It was a night that I'll never forget, but I wish that I could6/6

Re-reading this, I wish I put more emphasis on just how fucking cold and miserable it was. I'm not sure I can easily put that into words though. The chill. The draft. Having nothing but a coat and a measly blanket. The fucking gag-inducing stench. The fear of getting mauled vs the fear of being covered in shit, and having to be positioned in a tight fetal position to ensure neither of these things happened. The fact that I can still remember how fucking awful that was.

@Eiregoat IDK - I wasn't really all that friendly with the friend so I didn't get much of an idea of what her family life was like. I know there was a divorce and re-marriage. The mother didn't seem like extremely off the walls or anything. I found it funny she refused to have a microwave due to it causing cancer but was a-ok with cell phones up to her ear.I kinda think it's just one of those cases where that's just how they grew up treating animals.

I've known some people to be very callous with animals, but they tend to be very practical and avoid owning them unless they need them. Very strange for someone to go to the trouble of acquiring so many and not caring about them.I'm glad you didn't have to experience this often.

@ElTigre I think a few things did. Believe it or not this was not my first young encounter with people neglecting/abusing animals. But the penis pinching I have never witnessed anywhere else. When I was in middle school I actually wanted to be an animal cop, like on the TV shows. But then I found out to do that I had to actually become a real cop, and then get 'promoted' (re: demoted) to animal control officer, and 90% of my job would be picking up dead raccoons off the road.

@CatLord Yeah I was horrified, I've seen bad shit but this was by far the worst I witnessed first hand with the owners. If you grow up in that environment though, that's what you think is normal. You're used to it. I remember a few of my friends thought my mother hired a maid! Our house was far from clean, it was a home full of boys and dogs and covered in clutter. It didn't hit me till I was older that to my friends, that level of clean was unachievable. My mother told me later she legitimately felt bad for leaving me there, but she also didn't know things like the house wasn't fucking heated, or about the animal situation. She was also under the impression I was good friends with this person so she let me go.
