Covid lockdowns killed what is left of Australian community. The volunteer rate has permanently dropped. People have retreated inwards, curled around their screens in an attempt to self-medicate their existential despair and anxiety. > In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on volunteering. A study conducted by the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods found that the proportion of adult Australians engaging in formal voluntary work, which is done through an organisation or group, fell from 36.0 per cent in late 2019 to 24.2 per cent in April 2021.4 Further, only slightly more than half (56.4 per cent) of those who stopped volunteering in 2020 resumed in the 12 months leading up to April 2021, despite the easing of lockdowns and social distancing restrictions in many jurisdictions at that time. A similar decline is found by the General Social Survey, which found that the rate of formal volunteering decreased from 29.5 per cent in 2019 to 24.8 per cent in 2020. The Household Impacts of COVID-19 Surveys found further decreases month-on-month, reaching 20.6 per cent in March 2021.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.volunteeringaustralia.org/wp-content/uploads/VA-Key-Volunteering-Statistics-2022-Update.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjHsoeZtN77AhVZxjgGHVR0Ac8QFnoECB0QAQ&usg=AOvVaw2McNzDFRRHoZwGJqGvOuun

Our communities are decaying steadily, but covid saw volunteer rates drop in a single year what they usually do in 5 years. I would say we have 20 years left of volunteers, but what is actually happening is a structural collapse as a lot of volunteer organisations don't have enough people to keep them together. These organisations will start shuttering, which will accelerate the drop in volunteer rates. We are in death spiral territory, for the Australian community.

Volunteer work is a demographic issue in a lot of ways. 28% of people aged 70+ are volunteers, compared to 19.4% of 15-24 year olds. I'd like to remind you that you count as a volunteer if you take on any unpaid role in any organisation at all, including if you help coach your kids soccer team, help at your school tuckshop ever, or do anything at church.

@TinyFern I stopped volunteering about….4 years ago? Used to be active, but the orgs started demanding more and more, and the hysteria started to set in. By the time our state stopped paying for our credits to stay current (half the reason to work for free to begin with, made it a lot cheaper than paying out the ass for currency)

@WashedOutGundamPilot The overhead is also absurd. You need to train people in WHS and child safety and there's legal training for every aspect of everything in addition to the fact that every person gets slammed with responsibilities because there aren't enough people to share the load. You can't volunteer a small amount for the most part, it balloons with the training and certification expectations and it's not worth it. If I were trying to destroy the ability of people to volunteer, this is what I'd do tbh.

@TinyFern Heh. It is strange, where once I would desire to volunteer and help people out, I despise those who take donations for more often than not it is a grift and those who work for those I see as fools working to free for people who hate them and me

@William_The_Dragonborn Volunteer in this context includes helping at your kids school with the tuckshop, helping at a school fete, being team leader for your adult softball team, being an usher at church, etc. It's not all soup kitchens, a lot of it is basic involvement in your chosen community activities. People are just less involved today than they have ever been - they don't play sports, help at their kids schools, go to church, or do charity work. It's a sad indicator of the decline of society.

@TinyFern Well I even quite the fun, private stuff. I used to help maintain the mountain bike trails I loved, once they started demanding nothing but masks and vaxes I peaced out. I haven’t even done ANY volunteering in years

Based. Volunteer work in the Anglosphere/West only benefits people who don't deserve it. Been there, done that. Even decent sounding charities somehow wind up catering to blacks, indios, and vagrant addicts.

@MatebaRespecter I have said this before, but volunteer in this context also includes just basic involvement in your own community. Mums volunteering at their school tuckshop, dads helping coach their kid soccer team, helping out at church or a community fete, etc. It's not just direct charity work like soup kitchens, it's a major indicator for social organisations even in homogenous communities. The people who run Scouts, Girl Guides, Boys & Girls Brigade etc are all volunteers so that goes into these numbers. A lot of Australian natural disaster workers such as the SES are entirely volunteer organisations, as are a lot of people who help with things like blood drives. The drop in volunteerism is a really big indicator that things are going really wrong with a society, and a lot of free supportive and social community groups and services will just die because they can never afford to pay people. This acutely impacts the most vulnerable but also means that e.g. local schools don't get better library books because nobody helps with the fete. The tuckshop stops running. Sick kids in hospital and old folks don't get visits. Community dies, even for nice middle class people. We are seeing the death of the West.

@TinyFern @MatebaRespecter IN our industry it’s been interesting to see the level of volunteer support, as everyone retracts into their own spheres. This year I’ve only seen one charity start up, and it was designed to get suckers to fly women out of state to get abortions. The last industry org had less than $200k available in scholarships, in previous years that number was supposedly north of 1 million. Right now I’d be very unsurprised to find that most of the charity work being done is really just tax exemption-hunting, people willing to donate equipment hours or assistance, but no one to actually do the hands-on work. I mean, our rescue service here is basically old guys who like dressing up in fatigues and flying SAR, and young guys joining up to get an affordable rental rate to build airline hours.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @MatebaRespecter I don't think people will realise how much of society runs on voluntary work until it's gone and a bunch of quietly essential orgs and services fall over. Your community will just be permanently worse and it will never go back.
