You counter hate speech, a type of free speech, with more free speech. Or self-censorship if you'd rather let it die without dignifying it with a response.

@thatbrickster I'd like to add you counter hate speech by taking down moderators, decentralizing authority, and organizing against oppression. If the haters have no power over you, it's fine, but we should strive to ensure that, as much as they strive to rob people of their freedom when their speech doesn't follow the party line. That's what enables fascism, not somebody ranting about how great Hitler is, but making that guy a moderator.

@cy To say hate speech isn't free speech is like saying crony capitalism isn't capitalism. It goes back to the 'freedom of expression != freedom from consequence' argument. If hate speech wasn't free speech, it means we straddle a line between what is and what isn't one or the other. These subjective judgements are what causes clashes in ideology, such as 'anti-fascism' vs. 'my belief of fascism'. It's dangerous to partition the two like this as it involves writing off people who may have innocently crossed the line others hold in their heads and not realised it themselves.I draw your attention to people who did exactly that, castrated for their beliefs misconstrued as 'hate'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMLn1Ec4zqk

@thatbrickster Yeah, and the important thing is the power dynamic, not the speech. If someone has no power over you they can be as hateful as they want and it won't do shit. It's sick that people are trying to equate actually getting hung by an unruly mob, and getting belittled online. It distracts us from what we need to do: empower each other so that we can defend against hate crimes. Not hate speech.

@thatbrickster > what I wasn't ready for was the fact that the police would *lie.*...> I've been told I'm not appropriate to become a psychotherapist because I don't agree with Critical Race TheoryShe says without providing names, incidents, evidence...> As a society we are becoming more and more reliant on other people to solve our problems...yeah I'm calling bullshit on that video.

@cy >...He was explaining his previous naivety. Nothing wrong with that.>She says without providing names, incidents, evidence...Because she's currently involved in a lawsuit against the Tavistock NHS Trust. Kind of taboo to say things off-the-record if it jeopardises the legal case.>...yeah I'm calling bullshit on that video.TBH, I think we are relying on other people. It may be the result of the perceived illegality of self-defence or perhaps the idea there's always a charity or a helpline we can turn to rather than being empowered to solve our own problems. Thanks for checking that out BTW.

@thatbrickster Sorry, I was just staggered by that level of naivety. It's a disconnect from reality I normally don't see outside of elementary school students.> I think we are relying on other people. there's always a charity or a helpline we can turn to rather than being empowered to solve our own problems. Our own problem is there are people stealing freedom and opportunity from us, then telling us that we did it by not stopping them. Everywhere. On a massive scale. And you're falling for it.

@cy Not sure I understand your accusation, but okay. I'm not old enough to remember a time where we had more liberties. All I know is we're being played for fools *right now* and that the consequences of our inaction is happening in front of us.

@thatbrickster Well, I agree with you. I just think abusers say we rely on others too much, to justify robbing their victims of what little support they have left. The police are bulldozing your tent, but we can't let people give you a replacement tent, because that's just handouts! No, you have to put in the hard knocks that the rich never had to do, and go work for an employer who paid the police to do that, to buy your own tent! Again!
