To all Mastodon-admins: seems like there's an attack on all instances by troll accounts. Servers get slow because of it.They use thousands of subdomains of activitypub-troll.cf. My 'pull' queues skyrocketed.I now blocked the domain activitypub-troll.cf and all is back to normal. Please check if you're hit too.

@ruud I wonder if it would be a good idea to block all servers that use the .cf tld in generalit's one of the free tlds offered by freenom and not only is it attractive to scammers, it also pretty much guarantees that the domain won't be around in a year

@ruud this points more strongly in the direction of web-of-trust moderation, applicable to both instances of users. A new user or instance with no trust in the fediverse needs to solve a captcha or a cryptographic riddle to federate. This raises computational costs for spammers but only negligibly for good actors. This is the approach used by Freenet.

@ruud I read this yesterday. Assumed it wouldn’t affect me, then this morning (AEST) my server was down and I had to fight to bring it back. I assume it was this? Main issue is that elasticsearch won’t start without timing out. The whole server is slow, but that’s what was most noticeable.

@ruud Well, these attacks show, that #Mastodon has become #relevant. There will be many more attacks in the future and the system has to and hopefully will proof it's resilience. I'm pretty sure right now all owners of similar networks/platforms have team working 24/7 on plans how mastodon may be stopped. #ProtectMastodon #SafeguardMastodon

@ruud i guess long-term there is no other way than to make federation opt-in and not opt-out :-/or have a way to generate dramatically more load on newly federating instances that get's lifted once they've proven to be good-faith actors?
