@Bea It isn't great for sure - when I testified against my ex during his assault with a deadly weapon trial, he only got 4 months. However, I wouldn't have been able to escape him at all if I were born in my grandma's generation.There's still so much progress to be made but I worry there's a certain fatalism in some feminist's views that loses sight of how far we've come and (more importantly) how few rights the first- and second-wave feminists had, yet they were still able to make so much progress.There's certainly still women under the boot of patriarchy who are trapped in poverty or violent marriages and can't save themselves. That's all the more reason U.S. feminists who DO have financial independence and opportunity have a responsibility to keep the fight going.

@ghostprototype Yeah I mean I’m court ordered to live within a 12-mile radius of my abuser in an obscenely expensive city because we share a child, court gave him 50/50 custody because he used the tried and true “parental alienation” gambit to put me on the defense, the whole case I’ve felt like a criminal dragged before a judge for the crime of theft of ex’s property - myself and my labor. He continues to control my life and I don’t have autonomy. Forgive me if I’m not seeing the progress on the DV front.

@ghostprototype Just born at the right time. I got to be the first woman at a bunch of things, as did my sister and other girlfriends. It was a birth of fire but a wonderful time to be alive.

@Bea @ghostprototype Yes. My husband’s aunt’s ex threatened to kill her with a gun in his hands in front of their 6 yr old kids and they have joint custody. We all know why.

@starsstorm @Bea @ghostprototype My niece got sole custody, after years of legal fighting, but only because her son ran away from school and into traffic because "I want to get hit by a dump truck so I don't have to live with Dad". Not an advisable strategy, but sometimes, the courts actually listen to children.
