Great article by Eve Fairbanks from Wired about what will be lost with the demise of Twitter. But also an explanation for why the SIZE of a network effect isn't as important as WHO uses the network effect.Twitter was never about how many people used it—Facebook always had more users. For better or worse, Twitter defined what was important in the public square—even as it never should have since it was owned by publicly traded corporation.Good quote in screenshot.https://www.wired.com/story/musk-denial-true-cost-twitter-implosion/

For what it's worth, I'm already finding that Mastodon is proving more relevant *to me* in terms of sharing ideas with people who make a difference.

Also nice to see that Eve Fairbanks agrees with me regarding Twitter's negative impact on journalism. I mention this so regularly to journalists.Too often, they're dismissive about my concerns.

Modern journalism is a hot cesspool of garbage if a KPI is literally how many "important" people interact with a tweet. I've previously said that Twitter's Blue Check feature is fundamentally evil. Here's an example of why.

As much as Twitter leftists decry hierarchies and inequality, they sure have a funny way of reproducing hierarchy and inequality on Twitter. This is why performative activism (i.e., "slacktivism") on social media platforms needs to be interrogated.

I hope Yashar Ali never joins the Fediverse. What am I kidding? He'll join. So let me rephrase: wherever instance Yashar Ali joins, I'm going to block—because he signifies all that is wrong with Twitter journalism.

F*ck the notion of the Blue Check. It's the most toxic thing ever conceived by a social media company. I'm not kidding. Here is why.

Oh my God. I did not know this about Substance: they decide who to promote based on "importance" on Twitter. So basically, if you're not a Blue Check, then Substance believes you're not worth recruiting. Now that I know this, I'm not using Substack ever.

I keep telling journalists that Twitter is eating their lunch. The Blue Check is just a fancy badge that ensures Twitter seizes the distribution of news. You think it gives you status. In reality, it's the equivalent of Twitter sticking a "Kick Me" sign behind your back.

This is Twitter's true effect on status-seeking political strategists and academics. They're so afraid that the demise of Twitter will lead to their own demise, they're begging followers not to leave the app.

I don't agree with all of Eve Fairbanks points, but what a great article about the demise of Twitter and its devastating effect on modern journalism. Won't lie. Seeing Twitter die fills me with jubilation. People really should understand how toxic that Blue Check was not just on journalism but on public discourse itself. https://www.wired.com/story/musk-denial-true-cost-twitter-implosion/

@AnnFromMEandMA this is the story of our time; we've been seduced into believing that inconsequential actions on social media accounts actually *are* action. That clicks retweets and shares are as good as reading articles. That signing online petitions are as good as local political action. And hence our whole planet burns.@atomicpoet

@bettyboo Blue Sky has been around since 2019. IMO, it's vaporware. Why? Because people with a *lot* less money have built protocols and apps that do the same thing. You can use them now. And they have an actual community that builds and uses them. After 4 years, I'm out of patience with Blue Sky.

@atomicpoet Twitter took journalisim, commoditized it and turnied it into a mouthpeice of the the media companies. None of these entities actually seek for good coverage or stories (hompefully that is obvious at this point), they really only care about generating profit. Twitter was exactly the tool to focus the spotlight on them in order to generate traffic.Twitter was never good for information exchange. The radical change in the platforms management, operation, and content in just the past month has driven that point very hard.

@atomicpoet It probably didn't help that before this, universities like Texas A&M U. shut down their journalism departments in favor of communications departments. Comms feels a lot more like advertising and propaganda (shaping the message) than journalism.

@atomicpoet It's a good article but I feel towards the end it suffers from the author being unable or unwilling to imagine a Twitter replacement being better than Twitter.
