Once again I am begging the void to produce an activitypub fediverse answer to bandcamp.Labels, orgs, groups of punks host instances. Bands create profiles. Can upload their music, organized by release with lyrics, art, metadata. Numerous download formats available. I don't really care about payment for music, but probably some integration with external payment platform (librepay?) for PWYC downloads goes here.Profile is viewable by anyone. So far this is a self-hosted bandcamp clone (that also does not really exist as far as I know). You can follow profiles from elsewhere on the fediverse and you'll get posts when the band publishes new songs/releases (with embedded player linking back to the media hosted on instance?) or posts other updates (tour dates! etc). (It should have RSS too):PunkFelix:

Most small DIY type punks and such rely on bandcamp mainly as a neat and easy way to distribute their music basically for free. PWYC downloads are fine but real money-making (for artists who care) is mostly done elsewhere by merch sales or whatever (bandcamp in house store takes too much %, and bandcamp prohibits external linking to other mercy stores!)The same thing happening to twitter right now WILL happen to bandcamp. A million online demo tapes will be lost. The entire distribution infrastructure of DIY punk (and other subcultures too) will be lost. Building a self-hostable activitypub replacement seems easy. I do not know how to dev but I've wanted this to exist since before bandcamp (when it was MySpace filling this niche)

Adding a reply, because many people are mentioning @funkwhale I am familiar with funkwhale and it currently is not really suitable. It is great for groups of users who want to share their music libraries with each other, maybe with some artists sharing their own music in there too. But I have set up a funkwhale with this use-case in mind (primarily for artists to easily publish their music) and it was not possible to configure it this way, so that it worked more like bandcamp where band profiles are front and center and non-technical bands can easily present their profile and releases and listeners can easily listen. At present if funkwhale could be set up to do this, I would already be hosting an instance! Maybe in the future, since I know funkwhale is interested in exploring new directions in the future!

@mart0 I don kniw bandcamp well. Is it a bit like myspace? I like the general idea, with emphasis on Young bands.

@mart0 @funkwhale maybe some of the EU 2030 funds can be used by funkwhale to develop this?
