@spaceopossum because it is not Linux. It is like the macOS to windows. Also a very good networking platform.

@spaceopossum they are used as networking components (switches routers firewalls) and in high security required environments (thinking OpenBSD and Free BSD here)

@radix023 @spaceopossum my Internet host is FreeBSD on MySQL and web server hosts - I have tried it a few times over the decades and always went back to Linux mostly due to being unfamiliar and less support than for Linux

@ctsystems Yea, seems that way. On another note for you specifically. Where do you see the future of WP? I like because you have control over your own data. But many new to websites are opting for Wix, Square space, etc...

@spaceopossum If you watch "State of the Word" you get to hear the stats. Apparently the yearly growth of WordPress is larger than Wix/Squarespace combined. I have used Squarespace to embed custom features for clients, and yeah it's cool, but if you're getting many visitors, I doubt Squarespace is charging only $25/month, they got you by the balls then. Also WP has Squarespace-like UI now, natively or through plugins/themes. I would not be surprised if Squarespace is a fork of WordPress.

@spaceopossum Regardless, I'm shutting the doors of my blog hosting business, for various reasons. I might take a WordPress role inside a larger company for the right salary, but I'm closing down my blog hosting business. Maybe I'll switch to some other industry, haven't decided yet.

@ctsystems I am right in the middle of watching State of the Word. https://youtu.be/OpiH_P9aGhQThanks for that.Though why getting out of the hosting business? Too much hand holding for clients and no proper exchange for time? While real restate is going down right now. Here in S.Fl and many other parts that are not that tech oriented. There is $$$ on getting real estate and small businesses online. Most here still depend on phone numbers and still have gmail accounts.

@spaceopossum I didn't really answer your question. I think because it's open source, it'll survive a long time, and older websites will need legacy support for a long time. WordPress will survive as long as the WWW survives. If the WWW turns to shit, then I think we would revert back to something like Fidonet using Bluetooth networks LOL.I suppose WordPress could peak and be replaced by some Golang thing, but the ecosystem is so large that it might just continue for decades.

@spaceopossum Yeah, well doing everything myself for peanuts versus making 6 figures with benefits, free food, a nice office, free gym membership, I'm tired of being poor and doing sales/support/marketing/accounting myself. If a real estate company hired me and let me run shit and payed a competitive salary, then sure. Solopreneur life would be more tolerable if I was making a crapload of money in a fun niche market, then I could afford to outsource the boring bits to other people hah.
