I spent roughly 2x more time editing this video than what I usually do. And it’s performing horribly: the topic is more important than the edit!https://youtu.be/oWY4D3Gkc3o

@thelinuxEXP good video, but #privacy and #linux, for me, shouldn't be mixed. Apple is as bad as Google and should be avoided.

@thelinuxEXP to clarify, privacy-invasive apps and services shouldn't be mixed with #linux, even if for pure ideology reasons.Linux is where you should go to escape big data collection and intrusive practices. I see the value in having compatibility to attract the wider audience and make the transition seamless, but that should be only a starting point. The goal always has to be #privacy alternatives. No criticism to the OP of the video.

@vendetta Some people might want to move to Linux but not replace everything they know in one go

@thelinuxEXP @vendetta Why would someone do such a thing ? There's always a #terminal & a #shell enough to access linux on #MacOS or even #Windows. The main goal of #GNU/Linux is to promote #freesoftware movement & avoid #bigtech ingeneral. What's the point of switching to Linux & still utilize big tech services? It completely defeats the purpose.

@ask @vendetta That’s a very narrow viewpoint ;) Changing your OS is already massive. Asking people to also change all their services and applications is basically impossible

@thelinuxEXP @ask @vendetta I have been trying to get friends/family to start at the other side. Rather than trying to convince people to switch to linux I am first working on getting them to use better software that works in both worlds. I have a family NextCloud and matrix server which I help them set up on their phones, and a few other alternatives. Those who have computers (outside of their phones) I hope to eventually convert to better operating systems, but it seems like that might be easier if people were already familiar with open source alternatives for the things they use their computer for.

@thatguyoverthere @thelinuxEXP @vendetta (*open source alternatives)which ofc one has to relearn if they aren't already on it.Atleast they need to watch Nick's content, or else it's impossible for a naive to accept a different workflow 😅

@ask @thelinuxEXP @vendetta it's easier to show someone how to install and use nextcloud client on their phone than teach them how to use a linux desktop. Beyond initial configuration they can almost completely ignore it if all they want is file syncing. I'm already administering the server side of things so it's not like I am expecting them to learn how to admin Nextcloud. The phone app interface is pretty intuitive, and if they have a desktop the same is true regardless of the operating system. The web interface is also quite easy to figure out from a basic user perspective.Another aspect of this is that you are approaching privacy in a sensible way. When you install something like nextcloud client on iphone or android and disable the sync with the google or apple servers (if you can do that with apple) you are increasing the privacy of your user. When you push a person to a linux desktop and then open doors for big corpo you are decreasing the default privacy level.

@thatguyoverthere @thelinuxEXP @vendetta An another gripe, is that open source alternatives never collect or track your usage, which means you have to know how to contribute bugs, issues, feature requests on their hosted sources such as github, gitlab, etc. If you don't know how to use github, or such online source hosts, it's difficult for any user to improvise his own experience, as well as others.#opensource, #foss & #freesoftware is a give & take approach, unlike #closedsource & #proprietary ones, which are take & take.

@ask @thelinuxEXP @vendetta if my users experience bugs they will let me know. I can kind of act as a filter. If a real bug is discovered I can report it, but if it's just a PBCAC kind of problem I can handle that.

@thatguyoverthere @thelinuxEXP @vendetta Yep. We need people like us, as a temporary mediators to transition our belonging family & friends to handle complex stuff.Although, I'm sure they later have to learn by themselves what they currently being given, or else they'll drop everything on the absence of your assistance.

@ask @thelinuxEXP @vendetta yeah sadly I think most people just don't have any interest in such things. People using icloud or google drive aren't interested in how it works, just that they can switch phones and not lose access to files stored on previous devices. Getting them interested in how such a thing is near impossible.I read an article somewhere a while back that said something to the effect of if 1 in every 9 people would take on the admin role for a small circle of friends, a transition away from corporate services would be manageable and possible.
