Why do Americans call it #soccer when the rest of the world calls it #football? Hold onto your hats... The word "soccer" was coined by—gasp—the English. in the 1800s. In England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿As an American living in Europe, I feel both educated and relieved! #TIL Here's the history: https://blog.duolingo.com/soccer-vs-football/

@root Might actually edit the post, now that you've pointed out the PERFECT word. Hey I'm serious. I was mercilessly teased after moving here for using that word!

@killyourfm I vividly remember when Subbuteo (which was invented in England) was clearly labeled "table soccer".

@killyourfm I saw something on Britannica recently about the same topic, and it seems it all stems from the word 'association'.

@killyourfm Football is American logic (and Canadian). You throw a ball with your hand, catch it, run wit it, but… kick it with your foot just a couple of times in the game. 🏉😅

@killyourfm It couldn’t possibly be because we have our own version of football that started around the same time.

@killyourfm From my understanding, these sports are called football to distinguish it from horse sports (e.g., polo) and then the people in different towns (e.g., Rugby) made their own rules for these foot sports and they evolved. Some allowed hands, some didn't. The rest is history.

@killyourfm there's a reason why I call it "soccer" so shamelessly and it sure ain't the U.S.. only one term between "soccer" and "football" is unambiguous, and it's the one *coined* for disambiguation.too many people forget just how generic "football" is - it was coined in reference to the fact that the game it initially referred to was played on foot, as opposed to on horseback. god forbid if basketball existed back then

@killyourfm AIUI quite a few differences between our languages are like this. You call them pants (short for pantaloons) but English later "evolved" to either sound more french, or absorb the celtic Trouze and get trousers.Aluminium's a fun one - the discoverer named it Aluminium, then Aluminum, then changed back. US trading companies decided not to follow the last change. And some are just cos Webster was opinionated 😀

@Eunakria @killyourfm There is nothing wrong calling Football, Soccer. I grew up in Australia and we also called it soccer. Now that I'm living in the UK, I call it Football. Whatever works for you! This isn't even an argument we need to have.
