So my mother absolutely demands that I accept that border controls are a good thing, and detainment centers are there for good reason. Humans are violent and history has shown "time and time again" how any time immigration isn't controlled, the immigrants wipe out the natives. It happened when Europeans immigrated to America, and also when uh... go look it up. So could anyone tell me about the other massacres that were committed by immigrants? I'm sadly ignorant.

@cyThe history of Europeans in the Americas is one of colonial expansion and unabashed conquest. It wasn't like they came hoping to work for a Seminole company or something.

@mikefordays My thought is that unabashed conquest is caused by immigration control, not so much immigration. Whether people are isolated by an ocean, or by border police, they're a lot more likely to come charging over to kill you all if they're not allowed to significantly interact with your people beforehand. But I dunno, maybe there have been raiding invaders that weren't preceded by... obstacles to immigration?

@cy@mstdn.io What do you mean by 'demands'?I don't think that's the most common result of open immigration.

@john Follows me around boldly insisting upon it until I agree. Then apologizes for getting so worked up over it an hour ago. (But still insisting quietly.) She can be very passionate in her convictions, even if her convictions include... that humanity is more violent than it is.

@cyIt's just that all "immigration" isn't equal, and it's certainly not all violent. Europeans didn't do genocide in the Americas because the borders were (or weren't) defended. They were always going to do what they did, given their belief system and their technological advantages. To call that "immigration" and compare it to people moving around looking for work, or fleeing danger is ridiculous.

@mikefordays Colonialism gets away with all that shit because they can distance their patrons from their victims. The European people by and large didn't even know the extent of those abuses. So yes, the lack of an Atlantic ocean would have significantly mitigated Native American genocide. There's a reason conquerors have strong borders, because it's easier to get you to dehumanize the enemy, if you never meet them, if you never live together with them.

@mikefordays I mean, you're right. I think it's sick and demented that historians call it "migration" when it's military conquest, armed organized invasion. They have no right to downplay the horror caused by those tyrants, nor to equate that horror with innocent immigration. I *also* think that immigration control is a significant factor in enabling the nightmarish slaughter of your neighbors.

@Jain @scomulko @cy @mikefordays Yes, covering for Nazis and Holocaust denial should be seen as beyond the pale. You are the reason there are laws against that.

@scomulko @mikefordays Well, if you can't prove someone commited war crimes, then you failed in your own responsibility to prevent them from forming cartels and borders that let them hide the evidence of such obvious evil acts. So, better luck next time. Also "personal responsiblity" is fascist propaganda you're not fooling anyone.

@cy @mikefordays It is unjust to tolerate fascism because Nazis cry "fascism!" when there's talk of personal responsibility.
