@confederatehobo Hobo, if I've never read the books before should I start with the Silmarillion?

Silmarillion is closer to reading a textbook and can completely drain your desire to read if you're not invested in the setting. Definately not recommended as the start. The Hobbit, then Lord of the Rings is still the best way to start. It preserves the lost lore feeling in the lord of the rings, as some silmarillion material pops up in it. After the two main stories, i'd say read the Children of Hurin. Once you read those three, it'll be easier to read the Silmarillion as it will connect much of the chronology.
