#Tumblr joining the #Fediverse will probably be fine - there are nice people there and they're probably gonna keep ads on their own by website not cluttering Fedi. The thing to be worried about though is the prospect of conglomerates owning parts of the Fediverse in general, because we could very easily get into the state where two companies control 90% of it and all the toxicity of Twitter and Facebook comes to Fedi and then why have the Fediverse to begin with?(1/2)

This is something that would require active effort from us Fediverse users to resist, but hopefully any megacorporation joining the Fediverse will not grow at the expense of Fedi, only maybe at the expense of non-interoperable platforms (and preferably not at all).(2/2)(post taken from a comment to @BrodieOnLinux on YouTube)

@Yuvalne I don't know if there's really anyway to truly avoid that if a platform comes along and offers a vastly better user experience then say mastodon. You can certainly have a healthy FOSS space but I don't know how much that would appeal to people who don't know or care about FOSS when they see the new shiny platform

@BrodieOnLinux I agree. That's why the burden is on us, those who do care about FOSS, to keep making the Fediverse a welcoming space, so it doesn't just become 45% meta Inc 47% alphabet Inc because the FOSS ones weren't accessible.Tumblr joining is a positive. Despite the "female presenting nipples" nonsense, it's still mostly a nice ecosystem. We just need to make sure this isn't the beginning of the end for this noncorporate space.
