one weird thing about this ukrainian being closer to polish or czech is how the most obvious difference in local names being now talked in media is russian uses g where ukraininan has h, like Lugansk vs. Luhansk, while czech and polish does basically the same? Like polish town of Glucholazy is Hlucholazy in czech

@pony idk about Russian, but Polish doesn't have "h", it only has "ch". I mean, we write "h" but it sounds like "ch".

@wolf480pl russian doesn't really have h either, but the fun part is the letter in cyrillic used for g and h is the same, they just say it differently based on whether it's russian or ukrainian (belarussian too assumedly?), lugansk is written differently in russian and ukrainian, but not the g/h letter actually

@wolf480pl meanwhile i don't think g really occurs in czech as such, obviously exists in lot of places coming from german or other languages, but not natively?

@wolf480pl lol, maybe? :D g definitely exists in czech in a form distinct from h and it's easy to pronounce, but it probably isn't native (like you don't call Gustav Hustav in czech, but it's also hovno vs. guwno)

@pony ("guwno" is actually a common typo in Polish, we actually use "ó", which should sound different than "u", but doesn't, but makes more sense ethymologically and blends well with "hovno")

@pony they used to sound different, but now they sound the same.If there's any hint that the letter could be "o" in another variant of a word, then it's usually "ó", not "u".So like"droga" -> "dróżnik" (závorář)there's probably more to it but I'm not a linguist :(
