@john Would be better as "genera aren't real". (That's what's a stake in these names; plus a lot of people think species *are* real.)

@mike @john Although clades are real, and either of those could easily be converted to clade names.

@keesey @mike Yes, the concept of what we're trying to get at with these names is a) not clades, and b) probably not real. We should give up on the false precision.

@john Glad to see some memes in Mastodon! I thought they were lacking. But more seriously, I think we sometimes tend to focus too hard on "realness" at the expense of usefulness. Pachyderm isn't real in any way, but in some cases the word might be useful. Same with ungulate, or fish, worm, etc.Species may not be real, especially over deep time, but they're still useful in other aspects. Speciation, you can argue, is more real than species. 😛

@sauriscus Sure, but I think it masks a conceptual mistake (people talking about "hybrids" like that's a meaningful concept), and having it codified as an official thing through the ICZN is not right.

@john basing our whole taxonomical system on it is flawed, at least partly. But even Hybrids, or hybridisation, can be meaningful in the right context. Polar bears hybridising and eventually merging into brown bears is a real process in a certain time frame.
