The worst part by far about having a history of porn addiction is having parents who not only don't understand why that's a bad thing but who are openly disgusted and confused by the fact that I now view pornography as disgusting and deeply sinful. I wonder how much less time I could have wasted, how improved my youth could have been if I actually had a family that understood it's awful effects on me, instead I spent the majority of highschool shackled by the damned thing unable to tell anyone since my only authority figures both said it was "natural" and there was "nothing wrong with it". I only ever found ways out, ways that actually worked when I met a bunch of "dangerous extremists and Neonazis" who seemed to be one of the only groups on earth who cared about this issue at all and understood it's effects. I still occasionally relapse, since I've learned over the years that this curse never really goes away, but at least now I understand it's a bad thing and I can pinpoint the problem, something I couldn't do after 18 years of parenting, and what's worse is that I am far far from alone in that particular regard.

@CenturianFrend For me I'm not really addicted anymore, but I do relapse with some degree of frequency, mainly due to a prescription I have to take for university that raises my chance of relapse significantly as it's wearing off. I can trace almost every bad decision I made in my teens and 20's to that mindset. My parents were very religious Christians and against porn, but they did little more than wag a finger at me. Dad was even tech savvy enough to track my use and set up blockers I couldn't get around easily, or even just take away my internet access entirely (it was before smartphones, it would have been easy), but he didn't.

I also lead substance abuse groups in an Outpatient clinic and individual counseling. Not all addicts require detox or rehab. If I assess any of my clients require higher level of care, I make referrals.
